Read More	A VETERAN'S GRAVE WITH NO MONUMENT FOR 92 YEARS "Some time about a year or so ago, while doing a survey of Confederate graves in Dillon County, two members of the Capt. Andrew T. Harllee Camp, 2010 of Dillon came across a grave in the Magnolia Cemetery just outside of the town of Latta. This grave had a Cross of Honor placed there by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, as they placed so many of them on known veterans graves in the early 1900s. This grave, however, did not have any marker to identify the occupant of that grave. After some extensive research, it became obvious who had been buried here. Commander Artie Quick discovered an obituary, which had been given to him by Mrs. Helen Moody that gave the final clue as to the identity of this person who occupied this unmarked grave. The man who was laid to rest in this tiny spot of ground was John James Rouse. He was born in Society Hill, Darlington County on October 27, 1841. He was the son of Robert A. Rouse and Elisabeth McDaniel Rouse. While at the young age of 18 when it seemed that there would be war, according to his obituary, he joined the Darlington Guards for muster practice. That local Guard was mustered into the 8th South Carolina Volunteers as Company A. According to his service record, he entered service as a private on April 13, 1861 and was quickly appointed Sergeant on the first of June. Then about a year later on the 13th of May 1862 he was elected as 2nd Lieutenant and then promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 2nd. His records further state that he was captured on the Berryville and Winchester Pike near Opequan Creek, Virginia on September 13, 1864. He was sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio and received at the Depot of Prisoners of War, near Sandusky on September 24th. He remained in prison there until he was released after having taken the Oath of Allegiance on June 16, 1865. He was described as a 23 year old with dark complexion and dark hair with hazel eyes and the height of 5 feet 11 inches. April 11, 1867 he was married to Amanda L. Thornhill of Darlington County. To them were born one daughter, Louise (Bethea) and two sons, Fitz Hugh Rouse and R. A. Rouse. His first wife died March 12, 1892. John J. Rouse moved to Latta in May 1892, where he lived the life of a Christian citizen. His obituary states that no man has been held in higher esteem for his honesty and accuracy. He served as secretary and treasurer of the town of Latta for 23 years, up to the time of his death. The Cap. Andrew T. Harllee Camp 2010 of Dillon has acquired a Veteran's marker to place at the grave of 1Lt. John James Rouse. There will be a Dedication Service held at the Magnolia Cemetery on Sunday afternoon, December 5th at 3:00 PM. The public is invited to attend this service and help dedicate this marker in honor of John James Rouse. The Capt. Andrew T.
