Description	:	Joseph D. Summers was mustered into the army on August 11, 1862 for a three year period. He was transferred from the 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry to the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery. He served as Sergeant of Company of G of the former regiment until he was transferred on October 12, 1864. At which time he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of the 1st United States Colored Heavy Artillery. He was mustered out of the service on March 31, 1866.
