About midnight Monday night the soul of Lila M. Walker departed this life after living for the past three and one-half years in a helpless condition, and ended a career that can well be termed as an enviable one. She was one of the most talented girls that ever claimed Gibbon for her home and when so suddenly stricken she was literally snatched from the midst of a most successful work. Her condition and sickness have been a severe blow not only to her family but her home town people and acquaintances as well, and her changes during her illness for better or worse have alike been cause for joy and sadness. She was born September 2, 1877 at Fitzroy, Ontario, , and came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Walker, to Mason City, Nebraska, in 1883. In 1894 they moved to Gibbon and have since made this their home. With two of her brothers, Allen and Garnet, she graduated from the Gibbon schools in 1896. Being very much interested in music, she later went to Chicago to study. In the Kelso School of Musical and Dramatic Art she won great praise from Hugo A. Kelso Jr., whose synopsis of her accomplishments are such that any girl would be more than proud to have it said of herself and of her ability. Chris Anderson, another noted Chicago pianist, gave Miss Walker much credit and commendation. Graduating later from the Sherwood School of Music, fitted to teach piano, harmony and voice, and with wonderful records back of her as to her ability, she took up her chosen vocation. In fact they were so satisfied with her work and possibilities that they tendered a most flattering offer to tour with other mmbers of the faculty and school for an indefinite time. A professional City State Certificate of the Dept. of Education of Nebraska and a Life Diploma of the Music Type of California were among her credentials. Instead she came home and for two years had charge of music in our schools, going from here to Wood River for one year. Other fields called her and she went to Wahpeton, North Dakota, where she was associated with the State School of Science in the capacity of musical instructor for two years. Among some of her papers are clippings and one article in particular terms her recitals complete victories; adding that her inspiration and help gave the pupils ends towards which to direct their aims, and many other pleasant comments. Having a brother in California, and knowing the opportunities that are there for those who are successful in this work, she went to San Barnardino in 1916 and for two years controlled the destinies of the music pupils in their schools and how well this was done is attested by numerous letters and papers containing congratulations for her thoroughness and leadership, and her resignation to go to Pasadena was accepted with much reluctance. During this time she gave some work at the Chaffey high school and Union College, having charge of different topics at music sessions held by various organizations in that section of the state. Her period of instruction at Pasadena met with the same ready praise and she remainded here for two years, then to Santa Monica, where she was in her fourth year when taken suddenly so very ill. Four years of service in one school is of itself a most convincing reputation. Her work has been an inspiration to a number that can never be counted, to forge ahead and get for themselves that which she earned and used to such a great advantage in musical circles. For several months after her illness came she was in the Riverside hospital under the care of her uncle Dr. Gordon Baird; her brother, Dr. Arthur Walker and nephew, Dr. E. P. Miller. When nothing seemed to benefit her she was brought home with the thought of help perhaps in change. Nothing has been left undone and loving hands have cared for her and waited on her, but to no avail. When she was at Home she was untiring in her work and ____________ Presbyterian church ___________ school of which she was a member, and her influence was far reaching. She is survived by her mother Mrs. Robert Walker; he_______ two sisters having prec_____ death; one sister, Mrs. ____ of Gibbon and eight brothers; A. and J. G. also of Gibbon and John of Mason City, W. H. and A. C. of Omaha; Arthur W. of California and F. D. G. of Chicago. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by C. E. Thompson, who paid tribute to her memory. ____ furnished by a quartet, ____ McLaren, Mrs. W. C.
