Read More	McCURDY, LILLIAN ELIZABETH—Lillian Elizabeth McCurdy was born on July 18, 1902, on a farm one half mile north and three and one fourth miles west of Ohiowa. She was the sixth child of three girls and five boys born to Caroline (Sieber) Matejka and Joseph Matejka. Lillian celebrated her 95th birthday on July 18, 1997, and passed away at the Fillmore County Hospital Long Term on Saturday, Nov. 22, at the age of 95 years, 4 months and 4 days. Lillian’s formal schooling, kindergarten through the eighth grade, took place at the Goldenrod, a one room school, one quarter of a mile east of the family farm. After the eighth grade, Lillian took sewing lessons, enjoyed making clothes, crocheting, tatting and playing the piano. As a young woman, she loved to dance and it was at a dance held at her future husband’s farm, that she met Guy McCurdy, son of William McCurdy. On Nov. 26, 1924, they were married in Belleville, Kan. Together, they farmed the family farm located in Franklin township until 1964, when they retired to Geneva. During the early years of their marriage, she and her husband, with her father-in-law, William and his wife, Charlotte, farmed the homestead, known as The Maple Grove Farm of Franklin Township, and bred and sold registered Poland China hogs from the action arena and barn that still stands today. Lillian and her husband had one child, Valjean, who attended the University of Nebraska Law School, served as a lawyer with the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s office, and thereafter practiced law in Arvada, Colo., until his recent retirement. Lillian was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed the ladies meetings while she was physically able to attend. Her husband of 54 years died Nov. 5, 1977, and a sister, Rose Franck and her five brothers, Joseph, Rudolph, Frank, Charles, and John Matejka also are deceased. She is survived by her sister, Helen James; son Valjean and wife, Donna Lee; two granddaughters, Carla Lynn McCurdy and Christine Lee McCurdy; sister-in-law, Ruby Greenway; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were conducted from the United Methodist Church, Geneva, on Tuesday, Nov. 25, with Rev. Dennis Linton-Hendrick officiating. Musical selections were “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace.” Casket bearers were Robert Ohnesorge, Robert Rheiner, Ken Chromy, Robert Endorf, Louis Schafer, and Wilber Schwisow.
