Memorial services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish with Pastor Kent Stillson officiating. Lee Ervin was born Lillian Ione Overseth May 17, 1922, on Syttende Mai, Norway's Constitution Day, in Minneapolis, MN. She was the third daughter of five born to Millie (Chraft) and Henry Overseth, whose families had homesteaded in Dakota Territory near Canton, SD. The family moved to Sioux Falls where a son, Jim, was born and the girls attended grade school and graduated from Washington High. Lillian sang in the chorus and had a talent for drawing and dancing. She and sister Nyla were an acrobatic dance duo. In 1940, at age 18, Lillian met handsome SDSU student John Ervin from Canton. They were married in 1941, eloping to Sioux City on August 10. At Henry's insistence, a proper family wedding was held on August 14. The pair moved to Glendale, CA, where John worked for Lockheed Aircraft. Lillian gave birth to their first daughter, Anita. When John joined the Navy during World War II, mother and daughter returned to Sioux Falls to stay with Lillian's family. After the war the couple lived in Canton, SD, then settled in Sioux Falls for twelve years. Daughters Jeanette and Patricia were born and John began a long career with the Manhattan Shirt Company as a regional sales manager, moving the family around the country. Lee created new households in the Chicago area, Indianapolis, San Francisco and Greenwich, CT. Always artistic, she found her niche in stoneware pottery while living in Evanston, IL, near Lake Michigan. She and John bought a sailboat and began their sailing and traveling adventures. The couple moved to Minneapolis, and Lee became an active member of the arts council, continuing with her pottery, until John retired from Manhattan in 1975. They moved to a home on the creek in Spearfish, and opened Spearfish Pottery and Mercantile, specializing in Lee's hand thrown pottery and antiques refinished by John. Active in the Spearfish Arts Council, Lee had the vision for an arts and crafts festival that has become the hugely successful Festival In The Park. She celebrated her Norwegian heritage by having a Christmas Julefest in her shop featuring Scandinavian foods and crafts. It eventually moved to Our Savior's Lutheran Church and has flourished as a yearly fundraiser for the church's charities. Lee conducted pottery workshops in area schools and art workshops for special education students, and mentored many aspiring potters. She was an accomplished rosemaling artist, winning an international Sons of Norway competition. As charter members of the D.C. Booth Society, she and John led the renovation of the historic Booth House. They were active in the Passion Play and members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She and John were a couple for seventy years. They traveled, sailed, skied, danced beautifully together, and loved the Black Hills. They enjoyed a rich and full life with family and good friends. John passed away on December 12, 2010, and Lee's ashes will be buried along with him at Black Hills National Cemetery. Lee will be greatly missed by her two remaining sisters Nyla and Marilyn, her three daughters and son-in- law Gary, her cherished grandchildren Erik, Jesse and Sarah, great grandchildren Alex, Liam, and Laney, her nieces and nephews, and the many people who loved her. The family is deeply grateful to the wonderful women of Interim Health, and nurses, aides and volunteers of Hospice of the Northern Hills for their precious care.
