Leffler and Margaret Rader Leffler, was born Feb. 12, 1899 in Morris County northeast of Council Grove. In addition to her public school education, she received training in a business college at Hutchinson. On March 3, 1944, she became a member of the Women's Army Corps and received her basic training at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. She was assigned to the Adjutant's Office in St. Joseph Army Air Base, and rceived her discharge from the service June 11, 1945. Six sisters and two brothers survive. They are Mrs. Lucy B. Kieffer, Council Grove; Mrs. Myrtle M. White, Lamont, Okla.; Mrs. Florence Black, Wellington; Mrs. Carrie Shirkey, Gonzales, La.; Mrs. Rose Shellenberger, Bushong; Mrs. Fleta Hinkle, Hutchinson; Charles Leffler, Burdick and L. W. Leffler, Americus. An infant sister and a brother preceded her in death. Also surviving her are many nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts. Miss Leffler was a memoer of the Allen W. S. THE EMPORIA GAZETTE - NOV. 1955 A Wac Is Now Down On A Kansas Farm to Stay One war veteran who had definite post-war plans was WAC Lillian Leffler of Allen. Miss Leffler is now fulfilling her wartime dream of owning and operating a Kansas farm, and is the only woman enrolled in the Kansas veterans on-the-farm training program. She is taking her lessons in agriculture under Walter Porter of Council Grove. Miss Leffler drives 20 miles to classes at Council Grove in her 1932 "Jalopy" which she cannot replace with a new car in spite of the fact she is a veteran, has a farm and money. This woman veteran encounters less prejudice for her operating the 320-acre farm, feeding 50 head of cattle and 30 head of hogs and attending the veterans' vocational agricultural classes than during her 15 months in the Army. She was among the first groups of WACs assigned to regular duty and worked in the Adjutant General's offices in Reno, Nevada and St. Joseph, Missouri. Adding 350 pounds of weight to a bunch of heifers she fed seven months is just one of the livestock projects Miss Leffler has accomplished in her farm training program. Feeding livestock is the part of farming in Kansas she likes best. Miss Leffler credits her livestock feeding as the biggest factor in her success on the farm she purchased just 10 years ago. She is pleased with living so close to the Topeka market where she can profitably market her premium livestock just seven hours trucking distance from her home. "I have good luck selling finished calves on the Topeka market." Miss Leffler said. Besides feeding cattle, hogs and chickens and attending the veterans' classes, Miss Leffler is putting in crop rotation and soil fertility practices on her farm. She rents out the 100 acres under cultivation, on crop share, to a neighboring farner, and pastures the 220 acres of grassland. Miss Leffler believes this is a much better arrangement for a woman farmer than trying to farm it all herself or hiring help. This feminine farmer doesn't mind living alone because her farm joins Allen where she is close to neighborly companionship. This winter one of the school teachers stays with her, "but I am not afraid to stay alone," she challenged. Miss Leffler told about her summer on a farm with the buildings situated in the midst of miles of pasture where she went to sleep every night to the lullaby of coyote howls. During her stay on that farm she had to drive 10 miles to purchase a loaf of bread. "I was glad to sell that farm for my friend," Miss Leffler explained. Prior to buying the farm at Allen, Miss Leffler specialized in selling rural real estate for a Topeka real estate firm. She'd made enough on the transactions to make a down payment on her farm. "Because I think there is definitely a future for a woman on a farm," Miss Leffler said, "I have made much better progress farming than I would have on a job." Topeka Daily Capital - Mid 1940s
