Iowa Highway Patrolman Larry Holland was called to Hughson at 5:45 a.m. after the young man witnessed the crash which killed Donald Persson, 21, of Route 3 Strawberry Point and Mrs. Lillian Welsh, 46, Fulton St. Arlington. The two vehicles apparently hit head on after the Persson car veered to the left toward the center line while the Welsh auto apparently did the same thing Holland said. I have to assume that Persson fell asleep at the wheel, Holland surmised, "because of the way the crash occurred, and the fact that Persson had been on National Guard duty here in Oelwein, since last Wednesday." "He was relieved of duty yesterday and they came back to Oelwein on a voluntary basis at midnight to walk patrol duty through the city," Holland said. Perrson was on his way to Starmont school to check out a bus he drives for the school system, Mrs. Welsh was on her way to Grandview Nursing Home where she is employed as a nurse. Holland stated that Dr. H. M. Anderson of Strawberry prounced Mrs. Welsh dead at the scene, and that Perrson died en route to Mercy hospital. Holland also commented he worked 45 minutes attempting to free persons from demolished autos. Services are pending for Perrson at Feeney-Knutson Funeral Home in Strawberry Point. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burdette Persson rural Strawberry Point, and a sister Mrs. LaVerne Meiners, Eitzen, Minnesota. Services are also pending for Mrs. Welsh, at Gleim Funeral Home, Arlington. Survivors include two daughters both of Oelwein, and one son of Arlington, and several other relatives, according to Gleim Funeral Home spokesman. ............................. Oelwein Register---Saturday, May 25, 1968 MRS. LILLIAN WELSH SERVICES MONDAY Services have been set for Mrs. Lillian Welsh, 46, who die Thursday, May 23, in an auto accident east of Oelwein. Services have been set for Monday 11a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic church, Wadena, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Gleim Funeral Home, Arlington, is in charge of arrangements, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday. A rosary will be recited Sunday, 8 p.m. at Gleim Funeral Home with the Rosary Society and American Legion auxiliary serving lunch after the funeral at the Legion Hall. Aunt Lillian,You were so much fun with you and Uncle frank and the water fights you love to do. I remember the one time when alot of us family members we all were runing around Arlington,Ia at midnight like there was no one else in town. With water guns,water balloons you name it. You made our days so bright and the smile you alway had apon your face. I will never forget the day of the Oelwein,Ia tornado May 15,1968. Was a lucky one for me. Going to the state school at vinton,Ia and we stay that last weekend of the school year on campus. Which if Larry wilkins and Mary Linan and I would of been pick up by 1 of our parents,we would of met the 2 tornado's that come from Charles City,Ia around 4:30 p.m. on friday at the Oelwein,Iowa City park,That Aunt Lillian daughter Zella Welsh Larson and her husband Larry nick name red,was working on they house with my parents just got done putting wall paper up on the walls. we had alot of fun. Making veggie burgers and homemade ice cream. Boy do I remember the glass bottles of pepsi cola 24 bottle in a wooden case that had 2 handles to carry the case of pepsi cola. But Aunt Lillian was killed the next morning after the Oelwein,Iowa tornado May 15th,1968 on Highway 3 just outside of Oelwein,Iowa. My Prayers are with you Aunt Lillian,I love you very much. I will never forget you special smile,the love you give us all. You are a angel from God watching over us all. And hear and see all things we do and say. With Grandma Fern and Grandpa Tom too and my father Russ and Jim your son we just find out that Feb,2013 Jim die of cancer and then Zella Your daughter die Jan 24,2014 of cancer, my Cousins How hard it is to see our love ones go and now Uncle Tommie your second to the youngest brother that just passed away Jan 12th,2015.of diabetes and just find out uncle tommie had bladder cancer too. My Prayers are with you all in heaven. Please dear God and Aunt Lillian and all of our family that up there in Heaven please Bless our Boleyn family on earth here with love,Hope,Peace and support to love each other and respect each other and have manners and morals to carry on in the rest of our Boleyn journey of life. That no matter what someone as done in the past dear Lord,Please forgive them of they sins.
