Mildred moved to Meridian, ID, near her son David in 1987. She was devoted to her family, but was also active in church, school, and civic organizations. She began painting at the age of 61 and became an accomplished artist. Mildred was named "Mother of the Year" in 1954 by the San Jose Mercury News. She was even tempered, non-judgmental, always gracious and loving, and was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor. Services at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1790 E. Born in Yuba City, she was a Yuba-Sutter resident until 1952 when she moved to Walnut Creek. She was a teacher at Walnut Heights in Walnut Creek, a charter member of the Rossmoor Sewing Club and had volunteered at the Rossmoor News for almost 30 years. She also served as secretary to the Altar Guild at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Walnut Creek for 39 years. Survivors include her son, Harry E. Larson of Concord,; a sister Mildred Swenson of Meridian, Idaho; two brothers , George Herr and H. T. Herr, both of Yuba City; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry E. Larson, and a brother, Harold Herr. Married to Estella (Sally) Darby Herr Born February 20, 1914 George Washington Herr, 92, of Yuba City died Aug. 21, 2006, at Rideout Memorial Hospital. Born in Nuestro, he was a lifelong Yuba-Sutter resident. He was a retired plumbing contractor who owned George Herr Plumbing for 35 years with his wife and also worked for JC Woods Plumbing, Ashley Plumbing and Frank Booth Plumbing. He also taught classes at Yuba College for plumbing apprentices. He was a member of the Rod and Gun Club and the National Panel of Arbitrators; and volunteered for Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts of America and American Field Service. Serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was in General Patton's 3rd Army building bridges with the 1301st Engineers Regiment and was awarded the Bronze Star. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Estelle "Sally" Herr of Yuba City; three daughters, Andrea Gail Herr of Dunsmuir, Nancy Herr Miller of Viola, Idaho, and Kelly Herr Strampe of Green River, Wyo.; a sister, Mildred Swenson of Meridian, Idaho; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Ryan Herr; two brothers, H.T. "Ted" Herr and Harold Herr; and a sister, Dorothy Larson. Donations may be made to the American Red Cross or to a charity of your choice. Services: A memorial service celebrating his life is scheduled at 4 p.m. Sunday at a family residence, 815 Winship Road, Yuba City. Friends and family are invited to visit between 2 and 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel in Yuba City. --------- Estelle "Sally" Olive Darby Herr, 97,passed away on July 23, 2013 in Green River at her home in Castle Rock Convalescent Center. She died peacefully with family at her side. Herr was the oldest of seven children born to Jay Anson Darby, Jr. and Florence Elizabeth Adams Darby, born on April 9, 1916 near Avery, Calif. She attended one-room schoolhouses through the eighth grade, mainly taught by her aunts. After graduating from Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp, Calif., she moved to Stockton, Calif. and worked at numerous jobs. She married George Herr July 20, 1940 and lived in Yuba City where George worked in plumbing and refrigeration. She was a strong believer in contributing to her community and early on began her volunteer work in many community activities and organizations. She received numerous awards and certificates for her service and dedication, including; the Luther Halsey Gulick award for her 30 years of volunteer service to Camp Fire Girls; the "Pedro" award, the highest award for community volunteer service given by the Yuba-Sutter United Way; and the "Volunteer of the Year Award" by Greater Yuba City-Marysville Chamber of Commerce. In addition, she served on boards and in leadership positions for the Yuba-Sutter Alliance for the Mentally Ill, American Field Service, Gateway Projects, Marysville Art Club, Yuba-Sutter Pool for the Handicapped, and Yuba City-Marysville Chamber of Commerce. When George decided to go into business for himself in 1955, Sally became bookkeeper and office manager for the next 33 years. In 1973 Sally began a long career working with Yuba-Sutter newspapers, including the Daily Independent Herald, the Morning Herald, the Yuba-Sutter Times, and the Territorial Dispatch. She was a photo-journalist, feature writer, food page editor, and columnist. In 1970, at the age of 54, Sally embarked on a solo 10-week tour of Europe, a "lifetime dream" of hers to travel abroad. She also was fortunate to go to China with a local tour group in 1982, and immensely enjoyed the country and its people. Following her husband's death, she moved to Green River in 2007 to be close to her daughter Kelly and the Strampe family. In Green River, Sally continued her volunteering in Green River, serving as "Grandma Sally" for four years in Cindy Brandjord's kindergarten classes at Harrison and Truman Elementary Schools. She also was a volunteer at the Convalescent Home before becoming a resident there. Sally was also well-known around Green River as the "older lady with the white hair who walked all around town with her walker," stopping to visit people in many local businesses. Sally's faith was very important to her and she continuously sought new understandings of her beliefs throughout her life. In Green River, she was an active member of Union Congregational United Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband George, her son Stephen, her parents Florence and "Chub" Darby, and by her brothers Jay Jr., Jack, Andrew, and Earle Darby. She is survived by her daughters Nancy Herr Miller and husband Reid of Viola, Idaho, Andrea Gail Herr and husband David Clarno of Dunsmuir, Calif., and Kelly Herr Strampe and husband Brian of Green River; her sister Kathleen Darby Crespi and husband Lauren of Murphys, Calif.; her brother Daniel Darby and wife Eleanor of Altaville, Calif.; grandchildren Clark Miller and wife Karin Ellison of Tempe, Ariz., Craig Miller and wife Laurie Cinotto of Tacoma, Wash., Christopher Strampe and wife Kelly of Torrington, Michael Clarno of Dunsmuir, Calif., Bryce Strampe of Laramie, Nicholas Strampe of Rapid City, S.D., and Janelle Strampe of Green River; and great-grandson Jay David Miller of Tempe, Ariz. A memorial service celebrating Sally's life took place on July 28 Union Congregational United Church with Pastor Jenny Boteler leading the services. For those wanting to make a memorial donation, the family suggests the Memorial Fund of Union Congregational United Church of Christ, in Sally's name. In the fall the family will take Sally's ashes to the Buena Vista Cemetery in her home town of Murphys, Calif. ======================================================== Henry "Ted" Herr or H. T. Herr H. T. "Ted" Herr, 86, of Yuba City died Oct. 11, 2002, at Emmanuel Care Center in Yuba City. Born in Yuba City, he was a lifelong Yuba-Sutter resident. He was retired as a self-employed water well driller after more than 60 years. He was also selected by the Silver Wings Fraternity to fly a leg of their commemorative flight in 1977. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Gertrude "Bette" Herr of Yuba City; one son, Allen Herr of Yuba City; two stepdaughters, Ann Schafer of Sacramento and Patti Morrison of Oregon; one brother, George Herr of Yuba City; one sister, Mildred Swenson of Meridian, Idaho, five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Herr Larson, and a brother, Harold Herr. Contributions may be made to Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County, 1333 Butte House Rd., Yuba City, CA 95993. Services: A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Ullrey Memorial Chapel.
