Giguere, the last sibling of 22 children, died at the age of 98. Born May 28, 1915, in Disraeli, Quebec, Lionel R. Giguere passed on from this life on Wednesday, the 9th of April to be reunited with Henriette, his wife of 55 years, and his daughter Carmen, who passed away in 1968. He came to Maine at the age of 5 with his family in 1920, and eventually settled in Waterville. It is said that his father sold his farms in Canada so the girls could meet eligible bachelors more easily here in America. Early life on the farm in Fairfield Center was hectic as one might expect with this many children. His father afforded his mother Rose Anna the latest home tools to assist in raising this brood, including a Model A Ford and the newly invented washing machine. In 1942 he met the love of his life, Henriette and they were married on May 31, 1943. They honeymooned in Niagara Falls as World War II erupted. This was followed by an assignment at Bath Iron Works to help in the war effort. In 1945, Lionel opened his first grocery store on Ticonic Street in Waterville and began his own family with the birth of his first child, Maurice. Ronald, Carmen, Celine, Charles, Claire and Marc followed over the next 20 years. The Ticonic Street store moved to Fairfield, which, a couple years later, burned to the ground overnight. Through sheer guts and determination, the Fairfield store was rebuilt and reopened. Thereafter, Lionel's business grew to four supermarkets throughout Maine. All the children worked in this thriving family business. Lionel was a member and former president of the Exchange Club and a member and former president of the Apartment Owners Association. One of his proudest business moments was his role as a founding father of the Associated Grocers of Maine. Lionel was throughout a holy man. In those years, we all prayed together daily, attended parochial schools, and were active in St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Many of the children attended St. Francis grammar school and his sons were altar boys at church. Although Lionel only finished the eighth grade, all of the children were afforded advanced education, many in Catholic institutions - Boston College, Loyola University, Mount Merici, Assumption Prep, Elizabeth Seton College, and others. Lionel and Henriette's faith was tested when their daughter Carmen died at the age of 18. Watching them deal with this tragic event and their help in us dealing with the loss of our sister set a high standard for all of us to maintain strong family bonds. In 1956, Lionel announced the purchase of a camp on China Lake. After many years of spending a week vacationing at York Beach, we now "moved to camp" for the whole summer. A few years later, a farmer sold land to him around the camp, which was enough to have horses, boats, and other recreational items. It would be difficult to duplicate this experience in today's day and age. Many family gatherings ensued, including birthday parties for his mother Rose Anna in the 60s that included more than 100 attendees of immediate family members. In later years, the family has sponsored the "Celebration of Life" party at camp where relatives and friends gather for the 4th of July each year. Lionel was physically active until his early 90s. He took many snow skiing trips abroad and was often seen at Sugarloaf accompanied by friends and family into his late 80s. In his early 80s, he took up the game of golf and remained a diehard golfer well into his ninth decade. After Henriette died, he purchased a mobile home in St Petersburg, Fla., in the same park where many of his siblings resided. He is survived by many grandchildren including Michelle, Christina and Nathan of son Maurice, Chris and Peter of son Ronald, Ryan, Lauren, Luke and Carmen, of daughter Celine, Sarah, Moriah, Andre and Deahna, of son Charles, Michael and Nicholas of daughter Claire, and Noelle, of son Marc. He also is a great-grandfather to several with more on the way. Our regards to Lauraine Mansur for helping maintain his independence well into his 90s. In his later years, independent living became difficult and he moved to The Lakewood Continuing Care Center along with his three older remaining siblings. During this time, their average age exceeded 100 years old. Indeed, he was the last of an incredible family. According to his wishes, his ashes will be merged with that of Henriette's, his wife of 55 years. (Morning Sentinel 4/11/2014)
