An Exeter man was filled in an accident at a different crossing at the east edge of Fairmont on Feb. 2. Two men were injured in separate accidents within the past year at a crossing on Nebraska Highway 74 west of Strang. "We've just had a rash of them lately," Burgess said. "If they'd start looking out at the crossing and paying more attention most of them wouldn't have happened." Lisa M. McLaughlin of Sutton died when the southbound car she was driving was struck by a westbound Burlington Northern freight train operated by Dan D. Beranek, 35, of Lincoln, on railroad tracks in Fairmont at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday. Three passengers in her car were injured. Holly Brown, 15, of Sutton, was listed in critical condition Thursday at Lincoln General Hospital. McLaughlin's sister, Brenda McLaughlin, 15, of Sutton, was in serious condition, and Tiffany Schaldecker, 20, of Grafton, were listed in fair condition, also at Lincoln General. Burgess said one of the occupants of the McLaughlin car told him they had tried to stop the vehicle but skidded. About 2 1/2 inches of snow fell in the area Wednesday morning and the road was snow-and-ice covered, he said. Excessive speed or lack of visibility were not factors, he said. The train was traveling at about 60 mph at the time of the accident, Burgess said. The crossing does not have warning lights. Fairmont Village Trustee Del Korbelik said the village has been trying to get warning lights installed but has been unsuccessful in convincing the railroad. Only one of three crossings in Fairmont has lights, he said. The three provide access to the north side of town, which has about 150-200 residents, Korbelik said. Lisa McLaughlin was a senior at Sutton High School. Her sister and Brown were sophomores at the school. Superintendent Ron Wall said school would be conducted as normal as possible. A counselor would be visiting the school, he added.
