Lovell, 49, veteran merchant marine seaman and a former Ottumwan, died unexpectedly in San Francisco Thursday. His death occurred shortly after he had returned from a round the world trip aboard the S.S. President Garfield. The son of Roe [sic] E. and Mae Evans Lovell, he was born in Ottumwa July 27, 1907. He had been in the maritime service since 1933. Starting in 1939 he was stationed aboard ships participating in convoy duty. He served mostly in the north Atlantic during World war II. In November, 1942, his ship was torpedoed in the north Atlantic, and Lovell spent 17 hours on a life raft before being rescued. Also in 1942 he participated in the invasion of North Africa. During the Korean conflict Lovell again served in a convoy duty capacity, and helped evacuate refugees from north Viet Minh to Vietnam in the Indo-China crisis. Since the Korean conflict he had served aboard ships carrying supplies to the Middle and Far East. He was aboard the ship Jacob Luchenbach, which was rammed in San Francisco harbor. Lovell was a member of Military lodge No. 570, A.F.&A.M. and the Consistory and Shrine in San Francisco. He was also a member of the Pacific Maritime Cooks and the Bankers union. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mae Lovell of Ottumwa, a brother, Edgar Lovell of Ottumwa, one sister, Ruthann Lovell at home, two nieces and two nephews. His father and two brothers preceded him in death. One brother, Col. John R. Lovell, was killed in action in Korea in 1950. Another brother, Merle, died in infancy. The body will be returned to the Johnson funeral chapel, where arrangements are pending. --------------- “Lovell Services,” From “Ottumwa Daily Courier,” Friday, October 5, 1956: Funeral services for Lloyd E. Lovell, 49, will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Johnson funeral chapel. The Rev. LaVerne Morris, pastor of the Davis Street Christian church, will be in charge. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Masonic services will be conducted by members of Empire lodge No. 269, A.F.&A.M. Pallbearers will be Clarence Matheney, Paul Matheney, George Udhe, Ed Udhe, Charles Canny and Gerald Seaburg. The former Ottumwa died unexpectedly in San Francisco, Calif., September 27. His body arrived in Ottumwa this morning and was taken to the Johnson funeral chapel.
