Family and close friends were by her side. Born in Michigan, Lois R. Mahaney attended Lawrence College before joining the Army WAC's. She met David, who preceded her in death, while both were in the Army. They married in 1945 and lived in several cities along the eastern seaboard where three children were born. After honorable discharges from the Army the family moved west to California, settling in San Lorenzo 55 years ago. Lois received her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education in 1963. She felt children needed to be stimulated in the 3 R's early on, so taught mostly in 1st and 2nd grades. She completed her career as a Reading Specialist. Lois had varied interests that kept her active: macramé, calligraphy, Chinese brush painting and trips to the Ashland Oregon Shakespeare Festival, over a 30 year span, with her longtime friend, Gloria Hart. In 1984, Lois became a certified Tai Chi Chih instructor. She taught mostly at the San Lorenzo Adult School, but demonstrated these simple meditation movements to schools and other organizations, retiring from this avocation in 2004. Lois belonged to American Association of University Women, California Retired Teacher's Association #59, and League of Women Voters, Eden Area, helping in any way she could, serving as newsletter editor, timekeeper, mailer, recruiter and all around volunteer. Lois R. Mahaney is survived by her three children Terry (Darlene), Susan, Jim (Mary), grandsons; Brad (Kristin) and Jeff (Deidre), and great-grandchildren Alexandra, Kamren and Nolan. She leaves behind many friends and colleagues, including Sean Morgret, a student from her 1964 1st grade class. Lois had a warm hearted attitude and a good sense of humor, was friendly to all she met and was always positive about her life. She will be greatly missed. There will be no funeral services at her request. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Scholarship Fund for CRTA #59. An informal blessing of Lois' life will be held in the near future when placed in her niche at the Chapel of the Chimes, Hayward, CA.
