Petersen was born on November 12, 1925 in Turner County, to Niels and Katherine (Andersen) Petersen, the 12th of 13 children. Her early adult years were spent on the family home near Hurley diagonally adjacent to the quarter where she and her husband Leo Eugene Christensen would farm for the last 50 years. Petersen was born on November 12, 1925 in Turner County, to Niels and Katherine (Andersen) Petersen, the 12th of 13 children. Her early adult years were spent on the family home near Hurley diagonally adjacent to the quarter where she and her husband Leo Eugene Christensen would farm for the last 50 years. They where married on December 22, 1946. They had three children, Larry, Leanne, and Louise, and three grandchildren, Jim, Mike, and Annie. Lois was always involved in church, 4-H and Pork Council activities. Besides her family, she had three great loves, reading, the animals, especially the pigs, and cooking. There was always food, lots of food, in the house and she was always experimenting with new recipes. She was instrumental in publishing two cookbooks. One cookbook was for the South Dakota Pork Council, and the second cookbook is called the "Petersen Pantry", which is the Petersen family cookbook. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Leo; 3 children, Larry and his wife Pat, Alexandria, VA, Leanne Hearne and her husband Thomas, Eden Prairie, MN, and Louise Albers and her husband Kenneth, Canton; 3 grandchildren, James and Michael Hearne, and Annie Albers; 6 brothers and sisters, Marge Speh, Balaton, MN, Irene Lease, Canton, Harland, Hurley, Ruby Peters, Phoenix, AZ, Marvin, Sioux Falls, and Alvia Farrar, Hurley; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 6 brothers and sisters, Edward, Chris, Anna Hansen, Clara Larsen, Marie Gerdes, and Edsel. Services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial was in Hurley Cemetery.
