Description	:	Lois Fern (Miller) Messerschmidt, 97 Lois was born October 14, 1920 in Dundy County, Nebraska to Ralph and Nellie (Nesmith) Miller. She grew up near Wauneta, Nebraska, where she graduated from High School. She then entered Nurses Training at Bethel Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was there she met her Marine patient,... Read More	Lois Fern (Miller) Messerschmidt, 97 Lois was born October 14, 1920 in Dundy County, Nebraska to Ralph and Nellie (Nesmith) Miller. She grew up near Wauneta, Nebraska, where she graduated from High School. She then entered Nurses Training at Bethel Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After receiving her R.N. degree, she worked for three years at Greeley County Hospital. In 1941, at the start of World War II, she enlisted in the U. S. Navy at Mare Island and served 1 ½ years. It was there she met her Marine patient, Smitty. They were married in California, New Year’s Eve 1945. Following their discharge in late 1945, they bought a farm in Missouri, where they lived for 26 years. They were blessed with one son. Lois worked for 13 years at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri and then 13 years as the Director of Nursing at the hospital in Lamar, Missouri. In 1977, they sold their farm and moved to Oakland, Nebraska. In 1978, Lois began working at the Oakland Hospital and retired after 17 years at the age of 75 years. In 2002, they moved to Branson, Missouri for 6 ½ years and returned to Oakland in 2007 to retire. Lois Fern Messerschmidt passed away March 4, 2018 at Heritage of Emerson, in Emerson, Nebraska, at the age of 97 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 65 years, Smitty; an infant son; one sister and one brother. Survivors include her brother, Ed Miller of Denver, CO; sisters, Rita Manlove of Mesa, AZ, Ila Gilbert of Walnut Creek, CA; twelve nieces and nephews; a host of friends. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Wednesday, March 7, at Pelan Funeral Home, 310 South Charde Avenue, Oakland, with a Prayer Service at 5 pm. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to funeral at the church. Funeral Services will be 10:30 am Thursday, March 8 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 North Davis Avenue, Oakland. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Emerson, Nebraska. The family requests that memorials in Lois' name be given to First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, or to Oakland Mercy Hospital.
