"Hootie" Spevak, 69, New Underwood, died Friday, April 3, 1998, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 7, 1929 to Norman and Eleanor (Arnold) Walton at General Hospital in Rapid City. As a teenager, she worked at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park until she married Robert Mulloy White in 1948 and lived on the ranch at Scenic until 1958. They moved to Hermosa where they operated the Longhorn Cafe until 1960, when she and the children (Note: 3 children, Charles, Benita & Kent) moved to Rapid City. She worked in various restaurants there, including the Elks Club and Tripletts Cafe. She married Roger J. Johnson (Note: Sandra's father) in 1964 at Rapid City and lived there until she and the children moved to New Underwood in 1967. She worked at Good Samaritan Nursing Home until 1969, when she married Joseph R. Spevak, and they purchased the cafe in New Underwood and ran the Happy Hoots Diner there until 1978. She then worked at Good Samaritan Center until her health caused her to retire in 1980. She was known for her excellent cooking and baking skills and her ability to make any plant grow. In her younger years, she enjoyed dancing, music, horses and the ranch life. After retiring, she had time to tend to her yard and flowers, bird watching, and she knew the habits of most all birds. She enjoyed her grandchildren and making dolls. Survivors include: - two sons, Charles White, New Underwood (SD), and Ken White, Seattle (WA); - two daughters, Benita White, and Sandra Johnson and her fiancee, Richard Meng, all of New Underwood; - seven grandchildren Cristi L. White, Wanblee, Tom White, Wall, Casey White and his fiancee, Shelia Scott, New Underwood, Gary and Whitney Gilbert, New Underwood, Tawny Kezar, Washington state, and Kelsey J. Meng, New Underwood; - four great-grandchildren Samantha Scott, Madison White, Catherine White and Conner White, New Underwood; - mother, Eleanor "Babe" Wilsey, Hermosa; - two sisters, Darlene "Toots" Johnson and Beverly Taylor, and her husband, Chauncey Taylor, all of Hermosa; - two step-brothers, Larry Wilsey and Roger Wilsey, Rapid City; - three stepsisters, Lois Pigsley, Rapid City, Doris Reed and Audrey Webb, Wisconsin; - and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph R. Spevak in 1989, her father Norman B. Walton, - a brother, Norman "Ding" Walton, - three sisters, Frances Gatzemeyer, Phyllis Geary, Cleda "Me-Me" Bale, - her stepfather, A. Lee Wilsey, - and a step-brother, Billy Wilsey. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Behrens Mortuary and one hour before services. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, (1998) at St. John's Catholic Church in New Underwood, with the Rev. Reuben Valades officiating. Burial will be at New Underwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
