Lonny Lee Szabo, son of William and Betty (Schroeder) Szabo, was born January 25, 1970, at Community Memorial Hospital, Postville. He died May 12, 1985 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, MN. He was baptized March 1, 1970, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, and confirmed there on May 6, 1984. Lonny was a member of the freshman class at Postville Community Schools and was an Honor Roll student. His hobbies were outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing. He also liked to help older people. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Steve and Laura (Reisner) Szabo, and his maternal grandparents, Arthur W. and Elizabeth Schroeder, and his sister, Lori Jo. Surviving are his parents, Bill and Betty Szabo, Castalia, and a brother Terry, Postville, and two nieces, April and Angela. Lonny was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had served as secretary of the Luther League. Honorary casket bearer was Jon Romelton. Casket bearers were Scott Nesvik, Lynn Henning, Marcus Wettleson, Craig Heying, Darin Schnueller, Robbie Wedo, John Eichmann, Guy Schultz. Szabo, 15, of Castalia died Sunday afternoon from a gun shot wound to the head that he suffered Saturday afternoon on the Nyle Nesvik farm near here. The accident happened while the victim reportedly was shooting pigeons in a barn at the Nesvik farm along with the Nesvik's son, Scott, and John Eichmann. David Schutte said his ambulance firm was called and 2 units were sent to the scene. Szabo was taken to Community Memorial Hospital, Postville, for stabilization and after about 2 hours was taken to a Rochester hospital, where he died the following day. Services are to be conducted at 11 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. The youth belonged to Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, but it was decided that the rather small church would not hold the large number of people expected to attend the funeral. Szabo was a Freshman at Postville High School. At a meeting Monday morning, the class decided to attend the funeral as a group. They are to leave the school at 10:35 a.m. and walk to the church, weather permitting. The class decided to send a bouquet of flowers, as did the student council. The youth was a member of the council and was on the first semester honor roll. His only other activity in school this year was golf. The service is to be conducted by Rev. Howard Wolfgram of Zion Lutheran Church. The pallbearers are to be members of the Freshman class. Burial is to be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia. High School Principal Eldean Drewes said in addition to the Freshmen, any other high school students wanting to attend the funeral would be dismissed to do so. The Clayton County Sheriff's Department was called to the accident scene. They stayed there for a lengthy time, but said they had no information about it. They said all information about the accident was known by County Attorney Stephen Saunders. The county attorney said "the matter is under investigation and I can't tell you anything about it until the investigation is complete." Asked if reports were true that the injury was caused by a 22 gauge bullet, Saunders said: "I don't know anything about it." The Herald, confirmed, however, that the bullet was 22 caliber. "I assumed it was a rifle," Schutte said. The victim is survived by his parents, William and Betty Szabo, and by a brother, Terry, of Postville.
