Lori Jo Szabo was born June 10, 1958 at the Smith Memorial Hospital, Decorah, to William and Betty (Schroeder) Szabo. She attended Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, and was in the fourth grade at Postville Community School. She is survived, in addition to her parents, by one brother, Terry, at home; her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Schroeder and Mrs. Laura Szabo of Castalia; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. __________________________________________________________________ Two Castalia Girls Die In Crash On Friday Two Castalia girls, Julie Kay Monroe, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Monroe and Lori Jo Szabo, nine-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Szabo, all of rural Castalia, died as a result of injuries sustained in a two car accident Friday evening about 7:45 p.m. on Highway 52, two miles west of Castalia. The Monroe girl, a passenger in a car driven by her brother, Dean Lee Monroe, recently discharged from the army after serving in Germany, was killed instantly. Her brother Dean, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota and remains under intensive care. Lori Jo, riding in a car driven by her father, suffered head injuries and died later at the Smith Memorial Hospital in Decorah. Szabo was released from the Decorah Hospital Monday. ____________________________________________________________________ Two Castalia Girls Killed in Auto Accident on Friday East of Ossian Two Castalia girls died as a result of a two-car collision Friday at 7:45 p.m. on highway 52 three miles east of Ossian. They are Julie Kay Monroe, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Monroe, and Lori Jo Szabo, 9, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Szabo. Miss Monroe was a passenger in a car driven by her brother, Dean Lee Monroe, 21. Lori Jo was riding in a car driven by her father. Sheriff's officers said that the Monroe car was headed west when Monroe apparently lost control and the car crossed the center line. The Monroe car was struck broadside by the Szabo car, which was headed east. Monroe was thrown from the car. Lori Jo Szabo was critically injured in the accident and died later at the Decorah hospital. Miss Monroe was killed instantly. Monroe was taken to a Rochester, Minn., hospital where his condition is reported to be critical. Szabo was a patient in the Decorah hospital. Monroe suffered a leg fracture, a fractured pelvis and cuts and bruises. Szabo suffered facial cuts, a foot injury and other injuries. Dean Monroe is home on a two weeks' leave from the army. JULIE KAY MONROE Funeral services for Miss Monroe were conducted Monday afternoon in the Castalia Zion Lutheran church by the Rev. Arthur J. Tolo. Organist was Mrs. Gerald Hager and soloist was Mrs. Nanferd Meyer. Burial was in Pleasant View cemetery with the following pallbearers: Bradley Brandt, Larry Svendsen, Leon Bachelder, Gerald Blumhagen, Larry Brockway and James Reckward. Julie Kay Monroe was born Jan. 1, 1951, at Decorah, a daughter of Merle and Juanita Preuss Monroe. At the time of her death she was a junior at South Winneshiek Community High School. In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers and three sisters. They are Gail (Mrs. Dennis Anfinson) of Ossian, Marla, Brenda, Dean and Roger, all at home. She is also survived by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Preuss and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Monroe of Castalia, and one niece, Deone Anfinson of Ossian. LORI JO SZABO Funeral services for Lori Jo Szabo were conducted Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. Arthur J. Tolo in the Zion Lutheran church at Castalia. Mrs. Nanferd Meyer sang during the services and Mrs. Gerald Hager was organist. Members of the floral committee were Jamie Heins, Coleen Hogan, Carlo Flage and Gloria Hager. Burial was in Pleasant View cemetery. Mark O'Hara, Dennis Preuss, Byron Everman and Dennis Burns were pallbearers. Lori Jo Szabo was born June 10, 1958 at Decorah, a daughter of William and Betty (Schroeder) Szabo of Castalia. She was presently a fourth grade student in the Community school at Postville. Survivors include her parents; one brother, Terry; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Art Schroeder and Mrs. Laura Szabo of Castalia. Postville, Iowa newspaper
