Read More	Lora Simard Hedegaard, 89, passed away on Nov. 6, 2014, in Billings. Lora was born July 10, 1925, in Sidney, the youngest child of Arcade and Mabel Dore Simard. She attended one-room schools in Brorson, Sidney High School, and Montana State College in Bozeman, graduated with a Home Economics degree in 1945 and worked as a food production manager in large restaurants in Detroit and Cincinnati. Lora met Marion “Red” Hedegaard of Savage, MT while at Bozeman. They married in 1947 after Red’s military service in WWII and had three children, Vern, Susan and Jean. They moved overseas in 1955, first to Kathmandu, Nepal, and later to the small village of Pokhara, Nepal, where they were the only Americans and lived in a house with no running water. Next they moved to Seoul, Korea for five years, where they made many lifelong friends in the American community, including several Montana families–the Baileys, Ellisons, Dusenberrys and Monfortons. In 1963, the family moved to the Sioux Indian Reservation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, where Lora taught high school Home Economics. In 1965, the family moved back to Bozeman where Red and Lora earned Master’s Degrees and Lora taught in the MSU Home Economics Department. After moving to Billings in 1966, Lora taught Home Economics at Will James Junior High and Billings Senior High School. Another move was to New Delhi, India in 1970 to 1971 where Red was on a United Nations assignment. After returning to Billings in 1971, Lora worked as a substitute teacher, taught in the Homebound Program, and taught Nutrition at Eastern Montana College. Lora was an exceptional wife and mother and a great organizer. She taught Sunday School, sang in the church choir, was a 4-H leader, Cub Scout den leader and mother of an Eagle Scout, and a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was an accomplished cook and seamstress, taught her daughters to cook and sew, organized family camping trips all over the western U.S., and encouraged and supported her children’s music lessons, sports activities, and academic achievements. Red and Lora loved square dancing, round dancing, and social/ballroom dancing at the Elk’s Club in Billings, and traveled extensively, including trips to Africa, Europe, Asia, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Central America. Lora was a tireless caregiver to Red during his final years living with Alzheimer’s disease. She was preceded in death by Red in 2006 and son Vern in 2011. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. at the Ocee Johnson Chapel/St. John’s Lutheran Home, 3940 Rimrock Road. Use the Chapel Court entrance and parking lot on Rimrock Road (near corner of Shiloh Road). Billings Gazette 11/8/2014 Survivors omitted per Find-A-Grave guidelines.
