Red died at Valley Health Care Center, Billings, on Aug. 19, 2006. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease. Red was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Sidney, the seventh child of Danish immigrants, Adolph and Marie Hedegaard, and their first child born in a hospital. Red grew up helping his dad and older brothers, Nick, Pete, Chessie and Jack, irrigating sugar beets and alfalfa and milking cows on the family farm near Savage. His sisters Anna Hedegaard (Kuester) and Lena Hedegaard (Corey) taught in rural schools in Richland County. Red attended school in Savage during the depression years and worked as a farm laborer and in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He attended two years at Montana State College in Bozeman before being drafted into the Army in June 1942. He shipped overseas on the Queen Mary and served as a combat medic with the 34th Infantry Division, Company A, in North Africa and Italy. During the North African campaign, where water was scarce, headquarters allowed soldiers to grow beards, and Company A organized a beard-growing contest. Red won first prize with his thick, fiery-red whiskers. The prize was pretty great - three cans of C-rations! Red later served at Anzio on the front lines. After the war, he returned to Bozeman, where he earned his bachelor of science degree in animal science in 1947. On Oct. 19, 1947, he married his college sweetheart, Lora Simard of Sidney. Over the next eight years, Red and Lora started to raise their family in Glendive, where he was county extension agent for Dawson County; Moscow, Idaho, where he earned his master's in animal science; and Ronan where he was county extension agent for Lake County. In 1955, he accepted an exciting offer to work for the U.S. Overseas Mission in Nepal, and moved there with Lora and their three young children. He acted as community development advisor, working on projects to improve rural Nepalis' subsistence way of life. After two years in Nepal, Red moved his family to Seoul, Korea, where he worked as agricultural extension advisor, a job modeled after the county agent program. His colleagues in his overseas work included several other Montana men, George Bailey, Tom Ellison, Harold Dusenberry and Jim Monforton. In 1962, Red returned to the United States where he continued his career with the federal government in the Department of Interior-BIA. After two years on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota, Red and Lora returned to Bozeman for further advanced degrees and in 1966, they moved to Billings which remained home base. Red's penchant for travel and adventure never stopped. In 1970, with son Vern just back from a tour of duty in Vietnam and daughter Susan at college in Bozeman, Red departed for a year with the United Nations in New Delhi, India, accompanied by Lora and youngest daughter, Jean. In all, Red's multi-faceted career with the federal government spanned 35 years; starting with his WWII army service, up to his retirement from the BIA in 1977, when he was awarded the Department of the Interior's certificate of honor for meritorious service. After retirement, Red and Lora became avid square and round dancers in Billings, and Red was known as a dapper and gregarious fellow who always sported an interesting bolo tie or belt buckle collected in his travels. During his 58-year marriage to Lora, the couple saw most of the world, including trips to Europe, Asia, China, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Central America. Red also encouraged and gave financial assistance to all three of his children to pursue higher education beyond their college degrees.
