Lorence Evar Hanson was born on the family farm in Nodaway Township, Taylor County, Iowa, on April 5, 1914. He was the third of five children born to Henning and Lillian (Christell) Hanson. Lorence attended Fairview School through the eighth grade. Further education was denied this bright young boy as he was needed to assist his father and elder brother in the extensive family farm operation. On May 23, 1940, he was united in marriage to Maxine Daugherty at the Lutheran church in Stanton, Iowa. He and his bride moved to the farm that adjoined that of his parents. To this union, one daughter, Brenda Jean was born. This kind and gentle man was an excellent farmer, engaged in a diversified crop and livestock operation always keeping up with the latest technology available. Lorence loved the land, putting down deep roots and always striving to preserve the soil for later generations. Lorence was a man of many interests. Friends and family were the recipients of many woodworking gifts so lovingly made. He was an avid fisherman, deer and pheasant hunter, and card player and community leader. Lorence was a director of Glassgow School in Dallas Township, while daughter Brenda was in grade school. Later with the reorganization of the rural schools, he served many years on the Board of Directors of the New Market Community Schools.He served as a director of the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company for fifteen years as well as being treasurer of the Maple Grove Cemetery for eighteen years. He was a lifetime member of the Taylor County Museum serving as a director for many years. He also was a director of the New Market Low Rent Housing. In the 1930's before mechanical corn pickers were prevalent, Lorence became proficient in corn husking, being Taylor County Champion in 1940. After semi-retiring in 1974 from active participation in farming and moving into New Market, he once again became active in the art of Corn Husking and was National Champion for three years. In the fall it was a frequent sight to see his brother, Dale, driving the tractor pulling the wagon as Lorence practiced this art. He remained a member of both the State and National Corn Husking Association. Lorence was preceded in death by his parents, Henning and Lillian; his wife of over fifty nine years, Maxine; brother, Maurice; sisters, Dorothy Brummett and Arlene Orme. Lorence is survived by his daughter, Brenda Steeber and husband Roger of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; brother, Dale Hanson and wife Mary Etta of Clarinda, Iowa; sister-in-law, Velma Hanson of Diagonal, Iowa; five nephews; five nieces; and many, many friends.
