"Dude" Speiser, 75, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, surrounded by his loving family. Loren was the grandchild of David Russell and Ekalaka Eagleman Russell, who helped settle eastern Montana. Loren was born Oct. 21, 1929, in Ekalaka, the town named for his grandmother. Loren was raised on a homestead near Ekalaka and spent some time as a sheepherder as a boy. Loren enlisted in the Army and was a decorated Korean War veteran. After being discharged from the Army, Loren worked in the oil fields of eastern Montana as a roughneck and a driller. He married Suzanne Stark in 1962 and moved to Missoula in 1967. Loren was employed by Van Evans, ENOPCO and Champion International until he retired. "Dude," as he was known to his many friends, was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and four-wheeling. When he retired, he relocated to the hamlet of Maxville in the Flint Creek Valley where he could enjoy the outdoors he loved so much. He was instrumental in the establishment of the VFW Post in Maxville and was usually involved in planning or helping put on one of the many social events held at the Post. Loren was preceded in death by his wife Suzanne, his mother Romaine, his father Fred and his two brothers, Jim and Joe. Survivors include his siblings, Fred and Marcie Speiser of Missoula, Jim and Marlys Carroll of Ekalaka and Earl and Janice Krietel of Ekalaka; his children, Bruce Wilson of Missoula, Randy and LaDonna Larson of Boise, Idaho, Jeff and Missy Speiser of Meridian, Idaho, and Jon and Kerre Speiser of Phoenix; his grandchildren, Ryan and Sarah Speiser and Mark Larson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Loren's family would like to thank his friends in Maxville and Philipsburg for all of their help and support during his brief illness, as well as the staff at Granite County Public Health and St. Patrick Hospital. No funeral service will be held at this time. A memorial service is planned for the spring in Maxville.
