Private burial was at the Evergreen Cemetery, Superior. Noren, one of four children born to Edward C. Noren and Leota L. Pitman Noren was born August 19, 1918, at Superior. He was graduated from Superior High School and received extensive college training. Baptism and ordination were at the First Baptist Church, Superior. Dec. 31, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ruth Wedephol at Sheboygan, Wis. After a period of Chinese language study at Yale University, he represented International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches in Shantou, South China. Prior to the communist revolution he served in a family service center until the outbreak of war in Korea. He was taken hostage in 1951 by the communist government and held 21 months in solitary confinement. While pacing back and forth in his tiny cell to keep warm, he memorized all verses of 180 Christian hymns. Assigned to Hong Kong in 1954, he, widely known for his very natural use of the Swatow language and effective leadership in Chinese churches. In providing basic housing for refugees, his request for government land led to developing a village and conference center on an outlying island. That island is now the center of focus between Hong Kong and China regarding the building of an international airport for Hong Kong in 1997. Population pressure in Hong Kong created needs for education at all levels. When a breathtaking site for development of Chung Chi College was granted by the Hong Kong Government, he became comptroller, and later chaplain, member of the finance committee and board of governors. Resulting from the study of the London based Fulton Commission, Chung Chi College federated to become part of the Chinese University. He was a member of the planning committee. He served as district governor, Asia Region, Y's Men's International (YMCA). His skill playing the trombone, directing choral singing and youth choirs plus weekly golf provided happy pursuits restoring his well-known enthusiasms for work in urban ministries. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carl Adrian Noren. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, a son Carl; two daughters, Mrs. Jay McRae (Barbara), Hackensack, NJ., and Mrs. Mark Fuller (Deborah), Austin. Texas; two grandchildren; one brother, Robert, Superior; and one sister, Mrs. John Blythe (Donna), Ottawa. Megrue-Price Funeral Home,was in charge of services.
