Description	:	Loren E. Schiermeyer, 30, of Guide Rock died instantly when the tractor he was driving was struck by a Burlington freight on a grade crossing four miles east and one-half south of Guide Rock about 3:30 last Saturday afternoon. Schiermeyer was driving south pulling a farm trailer at the time of the accident, and his brother, Donald W., 27, was riding the drawbar. Schiermeyer, 30, of Guide Rock died instantly when the tractor he was driving was struck by a Burlington freight on a grade crossing four miles east and one-half south of Guide Rock about 3:30 last Saturday afternoon. Schiermeyer was driving south pulling a farm trailer at the time of the accident, and his brother, Donald W., 27, was riding the drawbar. The brother saw the eastbound 32-car train at the last minute and yelled to the driver before he jumped clear to safety. Whether the tractor stalled or its driver froze will probably never be known. Investigation showed that the train braked about 100 feet west of the crossing. E.B. Holloway of Wymore was its conductor and the engineer was E.B. McCracken of Blue Springs. The 1946 tractor was cut in two and scattered along both sides of the tack. It caught fire and firemen from Guide Rock were called. Conducting the investigation at the accident scene were State Patrolman Elvin E. Pesek, Nuckolls County Attorney W.E. Garrison and Deputy Sheriff H. Mc. Adamson. The examining physician was Dr. W.K. Bennett of Guide Rock. The death occurred in Nuckolls county (sic), one of eight traffic fatalities credited to the State of Nebraska for the 4-day holiday period. Schieremeyer, single, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Schiermeyer who formerly lived northwest of Superior. The family moved to the Guide Rock vicinity in about 1955. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Salem Lutheran Church south of Nelson, with burial in the church cemetery. The Nelson Gazette, Thursday, July 6, 1961
