Description	:	Loren Willey was born February 18th, 1872 in Guthrie County, Ohio. He moved to Stromsburg, Nebraska where he met and within ten months married his wife, Alice Jensen. In 1903, Loren and Alice, along with Alice's brother James and his wife Hattie, moved to Fairfax, South Dakota. At first, the two couples lived in one house, and Alice served meals to the public. Now the... Read More	Loren Willey was born February 18th, 1872 in Guthrie County, Ohio. He moved to Stromsburg, Nebraska where he met and within ten months married his wife, Alice Jensen. In 1903, Loren and Alice, along with Alice's brother James and his wife Hattie, moved to Fairfax, South Dakota. At first, the two couples lived in one house, and Alice served meals to the public. Loren was a drayman (a drayman was historically the driver of a dray, a low, flat-bed wagon without sides, pulled generally by horses or mules that were used for transport of all kinds of goods. Now the term is really only used for brewery delivery men, even though routine horse-drawn deliveries are almost entirely extinct. Some breweries do still maintain teams of horses and a dray, but these are used only for special occasions such as festivals or opening new premises). About a year after they moved, Loren's parents moved to be near them, and his parents along with Alice's parents built a hotel together, The European Hotel, in Burke in 1905. Alice and Loren operated the hotel. Alice's parents took a 160-acre homestead, which was called Coon Creek Claim, it was fourteen miles northeast of Burke. Upon their death, they left the land, the farm on it, and the hotel to Alice and Loren and her brother Theodore and his wife Emma. Theodore and Emma sold their own claim, bought 160 acres of land at Dupree, South Dakota. They, then bought out Alice's share in the Coon Creek Claim and lived there for about two years. Alice passed away in 1918 of cancer, and their daughter, Sereta, went to live with the Jensens who soon contracted the 1918 flu. So, Loren brought his daughter back home. After Alice's death, Loren tried to run the hotel on his own, but it was necessary for Emma to step in and help him for awhile. Eventually, Loren left Burke, SD and moved to Navy Yard City to live with his daughter, Sereta, for approximately 2 years and 8 months before he passed away on December 23rd, 1941.
