Loren and Myrtle lived a simple God loving life typical of many Hoosiers. Active members at the Methodist church in the nearby village of Blooming Grove. They saw the invention of the automobile, telephone and the television. The depression of 1929 hit hard for most people but the McWhorter's had food on the table but little money. Myrtle's spare time dedicated to the maintenance of her little "chicken house". This enterprise provided both cash and food to supplement the family until harvest time. Loren never spoke a word of profanity ,believed to be because his Grandmother Elizabeth McWhorter practiced the strict principles of the German Baptist religion. Unlike most families with several children to aid with the backbreaking work of a farmer, he had just two children. The crop consisted of corn, wheat, oats and alfalfa. A portion of the 160-acre farm was pasture for no more than 20 head of milk cattle including calves. There were always several head of sheep and a few hogs. A dog and several cats to control the rodent population. Recreation consisted of family get together on the weekends to enjoy Myrtle's home cooking, discuss the progress of the crops and the health and well being of the livestock with politics mixed in for lively debate. The seven-mile Saturday trek to the county seat at Brookville to pay bills, catch up on gossip, ice cream at the Rexall drug store and occasionally a movie at the Moren theatre.
