Loren was born Nov. 7, 1946 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the only son of Loren Paul Waddell Sr. and Irene (Pilcher) Waddell. Loren spent his earlier years in Iowa sandwiched between five sisters and always said the hand-me-downs were terrible. Loren was born Nov. 7, 1946 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the only son of Loren Paul Waddell Sr. and Irene (Pilcher) Waddell. Loren spent his earlier years in Iowa sandwiched between five sisters and always said the hand-me-downs were terrible. His family eventually moved to the Northwest and later settled in the Lower Yakima Valley of Washington. He graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1966. On July 6, 1968, Loren went on his first date with Dorothy Schell. Six weeks later they were engaged, and on Nov. 9, 1968 Loren and Dorothy were married in Sunnyside at the First Christian Church in front of family and friends, a marriage that lasted 45 years. In 1973 they welcomed their son, Kenneth and four years later, in 1977, their daughter, Sarah. The family spent many years camping, fishing and generally playing together. Loren’s first job was with Western Farmers Corporation in Sunnyside. He then worked as a laborer and was a member of Local 348 for 10 years and was employed by Battelle Northwest in Richland for 26 years. He completed his career in 2011 and spent his time being a devoted husband, loving father, mischievous brother, and adoring grandfather. Loren was a man of strong conviction of faith. A steadfast man with a tender heart and a passion for ministry. His love for God and desire to share his faith led Loren to spend many years as a voluntary chaplain at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. Loren spent time as a Youth for Christ leader and attended Central Washington Bible College for one year. Loren was a licensed minister with the Church of God of Anderson, Indiana. Loren also served as a youth leader for the Sunnyside Church of God. For the past 12 years Loren attended Sunnyside Neighborhood church. His surviving family consider it a privilege to carry on his legacy: his wife, Dorothy; his children, Kenneth (Jana) Waddell and Sarah (Aaron) Stonemetz; his sisters, Mariea (St. Clair) Woodworth, Joyce Korevaar, Leah (Don) Schaneman, Avon (Bob) Pelsang; his grandchildren, John (Mikayla) Tadlock, Anita (Zach) Brandvold, Shayla Chrisp; and his great-grandchildren, Jaidyn, Lauryn, Ariah, Riley and Cynthia. Loren was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lorna; his nephew, Danny; his grandson, Jaxson Paul; and two other grandchildren. Special thanks to long-time friend and brother in Christ, John Overton, for his devoted support, especially in recent months. Viewing and visitation will be held Thursday, July 10, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday, July 11, 2014, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., with funeral services to follow at 10 a.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Sunnyside. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that donations please be made to the Huntington’s Disease Society, N.W. Chapter, P.O. Box 33345, Seattle, WA. 98133 or ay be left at Smith Funeral Home. Loren’s family will fondly remember his love of hunting, fishing, sibling luncheons, bird watching, model trains and cars, frontier history, the Packers, Snickers bars, his dog, Patches and endless teasing of all he loved.
