Winkelman, 95, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Saturday afternoon, March 23, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo from complications of leukemia. Lorenz Henry Winkelman was born on October 14, 1917, in Lafayette Township, near Plainfield, Iowa, the son of William L. and Meta (Ringleb) Winkelman. Winkelman, 95, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Saturday afternoon, March 23, 2013, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo from complications of leukemia. Lorenz Henry Winkelman was born on October 14, 1917, in Lafayette Township, near Plainfield, Iowa, the son of William L. and Meta (Ringleb) Winkelman. He was baptized on November 18, 1917 at the First United Church of Christ – Pleasant Valley, rural Clarksville and confirmed on August 16, 1931, by Rev. Satory at the Evangelical Immanuel United Church in Clarksville. Lorenz attended country school near Plainfield and northwest of Waverly and helped his parents on the farm. In 1938, he became employed at Schield Lime Quarry and continued to help his parents on the farm. On April 12, 1942, he was united in marriage to Dorlena Ida Pries at St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly by Rev. Harold Roschke. The couple made their home in Waverly and in 1942, Lorenz became employed at Carnation Company. In 1943, he began his own Agri Lime and Rock Hauling business. In 1970, he became employed at Schield Bantam Company (now Terex), where he worked in maintenance, retiring from Bantam in 1981. Lorenz then continued his rock hauling business retiring in 1995 after running the business for over 50 years. Lorenz also had cream route for Washington Creamery for 9 years. Dorlena died on April 29, 2010, and Lorenz continued to live in his home, where he and Dorlena had lived for over 64 years. Lorenz became a member of St. John Lutheran Church in 1943, where he was a former Trustee, Usher and Greeter. Lorenz enjoyed spending time with his family. Lorenz is survived by his two children, Judy (Steve) Winkelman-Miller of Waterloo, Iowa; Richard Winkelman of Bemidji, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Chris Winkelman of Altoona, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Angela, Melissa, Jayson, Jessica, Aaron and Dustin; 8 great grandchildren, Hilary, Jade, Blake, Jeffrey, Jonathon, Rylee, Jaxson and Eyan, 2 step-grandchildren, Shane and Jenny; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Winkelman of Clear Lake, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorlena, a son, Rodney Winkelman; three brothers, Erwin Winkelman and his wife Virginia, Lloyd Winkelman and Edward Winkelman and three sisters, Mable, Mildred and Lois in infancy. Celebration of Life Services will be held on Thursday, March 28, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly, with Rev. Matthew Versemann and Rev. Keith Brustuen officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, March 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church. Memorials may be directed to St. John Lutheran Church or Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.
