WESTFALL Mr. Lorenzo Dow Westfall, Derby's oldest citizen, died at his home on Wednesday evening, Jan. 5th, 1911, at 8 o'clock. WESTFALL Mr. Lorenzo Dow Westfall, Derby's oldest citizen, died at his home on Wednesday evening, Jan. 5th, 1911, at 8 o'clock. Mr. Westfall was born near Middletown, Ohio, on Dec. 23rd, 1818, and was married to Miss Eleanor Crawford of that place in 1836. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Wisconsin, where they remained but a short time when they came to Iowa, then a territory, and settled near Burlington. Burlington was then but a village and Iowa Territory still the home of many Indians. Mr. Westfall could relate from his own experiences many interesting stories of the pleasures and hardships of the early days in Iowa. In the fifties Mr. Westfall and family moved to a farm near Eddyville, where Mrs. Westfall died. In 1862 he was again married to Miss Miranda Brown, who died in Derby about twelve years ago. In 1877, Mr. Westfall came to Derby, which place has since been his home with the exception of a few years spent at Russell. Mr. Westfall has seven children living. They are Mrs. Frank Penick, of Derby, Mrs. John Tedrick, of Artesia, California, Julian Westfall, of Ankeny, Iowa, Mrs. Margaret Stodgehill, of Portland, Oregon, Allison Westfall, of Redlands, California, Wesley A. Westfall, of Albany, Oregon and Francis Westfall, of Chanute, Kansas. The deceased had been a member of the M. E. church for 72 years, having united with that church when he was twenty years of age. Mr. Westfall was blessed with a disposition that was remarkable for its cheeriness. Whatever were his burdens he endeavored at all times to look upon the bright side of life. "If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men," was a favorite passage of scripture of the deceased and one which those who knew him best know that he faithfully followed. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. M. H. Keash. Interment was made at the Murray cemetery.
