LORENZO BURGESS – A WORLD WAR I GASSED VICTIM (Special to the Gazette – Republican, Cedar Rapids, IA) __Palo War Vet, Twice Gassed, Tips Scales at 408, once weighed 115 __PALO, July 16 – Lorenzo L. Burgess, 30, World War veteran of Palo is suffering from an unusual after affect of having been twice gassed while in service in France, once on May 29, 1918, at Chateau Theirry, and again July 30 of the same year in the Alsace-Lorraine district. __When he enlisted in the United States Army at Cedar Rapids July 31, 1917, at 20 years of age, he weighed 155 pounds, and was of average stature, being about five feet ten inches tall. __After he was gassed the second time and wounded by an exploding shell, he was taken to a hospital back of the lines and under treatment for several weeks. At that time he weighed only 115 pounds, but after partly regaining his health, he immediately began to gain in weight until at the present time he weighs 408 pounds. __Government physicians at the U.S. Veterans hospital at Waukesha, Wis., where he was treated for three months two years ago, say that his unusual condition is caused by inertia of the thyroid gland. While Mr. Burgess is able to be about at all times, he is unable to walk from his home to PALO, a distance of only one-half mile. He says he is suffering more than usual this summer from inability to breathe, especially when lying down because of the weakened condition of his lungs. __Mr. Burgess was among the first Americans to see active service in France, being a member of Company C, 168th Infantry of the famous Rainbow Division. He made the trip across the Atlantic in the “President Grant,” arriving on English soil in November 1917. Mr. Burgess was honorably discharged as a first class private in 1919, and returned to his home in Palo June 26th of that year, having come directly here after landing in New York.
