Read More	Loretta Elizabeth (Walkup) Mazza, 83, passed away peacefully on Jan. 10, 2022 at Madison Valley Medical Center in Ennis, Montana with all three daughters at her side - leaving empty her post at the kitchen window of her Philipsburg, Montana home, from which she often kept quiet watch over the comings and goings of 'the 'Burg' below. Born in Philipsburg on Dec. 8, 1938 to parents Ben Walkup and Ellen (Courtney) Walkup, Loretta spent her early years playing with older brother Albert and mining tailings at the family mine, 'The Gold Bug', near Maxville. Loretta attended Philipsburg schools for the entirety of her formal education, graduating from Granite County High School in May 1956. Later that year, she married David Miller, giving birth to her three daughters between 1957 and 1960. Leaving Philipsburg for Green Mountain in Wyoming, Loretta spent time exploring the vast landscape on motorcycles with her young family. The family eventually returned to their Philipsburg home, and Loretta and David were frequently seen taking weekend drives with their daughters in tow in David's 1963 Pontiac Catalina Convertible. While raising her family, Loretta also served as a teacher's aide for Philipsburg's schools. Always recognizable in the schoolyard thanks to her signature black scarf, she is remembered for treating students as though they were her own children and taking many of them under her wings - over time becoming a beloved second mother of sorts to many in the community and keeping tabs on these individuals well into adulthood. Following David's passing, Loretta married Leon 'Tiny' Larson in 1978 and shortly later welcomed her first grandchildren. She spent many happy years hosting friends and family at her and Tiny's cabin retreat, flipping sourdough hotcakes and serving them dripping with huckleberry syrup, watching wildlife, panfrying fish fresh from the creek, and swapping stories while playing pinochle late into the night. Loretta also took up ceramics during this period -painstakingly painting the white figurines, firing them in her basement kiln, and distributing the final pieces to loved ones who still proudly display them as treasured keepsakes and reminders of Loretta's love. After Tiny's death, Loretta married Calvin Mazza in Philipsburg . The couple enjoyed frequent steelhead fishing trips on the Colombia River and Loretta found another passion in golf, getting some exercise while refining her swing. After moving to Nevada with Cal for work, she was also known to pass the time playing the slots in Elko's casinos. On occasion she'd take the house for a decent sum and was always quick to share her fortune. Upon Cal's retirement, the couple returned to their Philipsburg roots, taking up a quiet life at their new home on the Catholic Church hillside, watching their family expand with Loretta welcoming several great-grandchildren into the world. After losing Cal in 2017, Loretta filled her time by tuning her programs on The Game Show Network, playing Bridge with the girls, and avid reading - still tackling the occasional crossword or Sudoku puzzle between drop-ins from her friends and the visits of her now extensive family. In keeping with her motherly instincts, she continued to keep tabs on her community and those she loved, religiously viewing the nightly local news broadcast, scanning area newspapers, and even scrolling through Facebook pages in her final years. Loretta was preceded in death by her mother, Ellen; father, Ben; sister-in-law, Lois Walkup; and son-in-law, Matt McCale; and her beloved husbands David Miller, Leon (Tiny) Larson and Calvin Mazza. She is survived by her three daughters, Debbie Miller of Drummond, Brenda (Marc) Glines of Ennis, and Karla McCale of Sand Coulee; her six grandchildren, Lori Jo Russell, Jim (Carly) Russell, Levi (Danielle) McCale, Sarah (Mike) Schilling, Courtney Glines, and Bryson Glines; and her six great-grandchildren, Jayleigh Schilling, Matthew Schilling, Dakota McCale, Riley Russell, Jackson Russell, and Alden Glines; her brother Albert Walkup of California and nephews Dan Walkup and Doug Walkup. Loretta's service has been scheduled for June 4, 2022, at which time her ashes will be interred at the Philipsburg Cemetery and a Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm at the Granite County Museum in the Courtney Hotel building erected by her great uncles in the late 1800s. All who knew and loved Loretta will undoubtedly sense her absence from her now vacant perch at the kitchen table overlooking lower Main Street, but her family and friends take solace in knowing that although Loretta has concluded her earthly watch over 'the 'Burg', we need only look in our hearts to know she's still keeping an eye on us all.
