Jairus had been a veteran of the civil war serving in 14th Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry Company D as a private. Lorin had sisters Hettie M. born 1867, Alice E.born 1870, and Mary born 1874. Jairus had been a veteran of the civil war serving in 14th Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry Company D as a private. Lorin had sisters Hettie M. born 1867, Alice E.born 1870, and Mary born 1874. The years are approximate since the census only showed age. Their mother died presumably as a result of child birth. After Mary passed away Jairus must have been unable to take care of his young children being in poor health himself and passed them on to his brother-in-law and sister-in-law. They were ages 8, 5, 3, and 1 when they show up living with Homer W. Woodward age 22 and Melissa C. Woodward age 18, where they lived in 1875 in Hiawatha KS. Melissa C. Woodward would later marry Jarius's brother Perry. The infant Mary Ashcraft was adpoted by a family named Perry after 1875. After that marriage Hettie and Alice go to live with their grandmother Esther Woodward in Prairie Dog, Decatur, Kansas and Loren continues to live in Commanche, Texas, with his uncle Perry Ashcroft's family. Their father Jairus, as taken from the obituatry in the Norton County Advance (Norton, Kansas) June27, 1878, "died at the Commercial Hotel in this place, of consumption on Wednesday morning, June 26, 1878, at 9 o'clock am, J. W. Ashcroft, aged 34 years. The deceased was born in Genessee County, New York, and came west when quite a young man. He was taken with consumption two years ago, and at times appeared to be recovering. Though he had been in Norton but about a month, yet had he gained many warm friends, who truly sympathized with him. The funeral took place on Thursday morning, and the remains were enterred in the Norton Cemetery." By the age of 8 Lorin had lost his mother, father, youngest sister adopted by Perry family and sisters now resided with his grandmother in another state.
