Description	:	Grandfather James Van Winkle, youngest child of Abraham and Jerusha Coy Van Winkle was born in Illinois about 1822. He married Sarah Pike of Kentucky in 1845 and moved to Johnson County, Nebraska about 1866. Their ninth child, George B. Van Winkle was one year old. James and Sarah spent their later years in Phillips County, Kansas. George B. married Ida M. Setzer of Red Rock, Iowa in 1885 at Brock, NE. James and Sarah spent their later years in Phillips County, Kansas. George B. married Ida M. Setzer of Red Rock, Iowa in 1885 at Brock, NE. Their children were Troy, born in 1887, Clyde, 1889 and Myrtie, born in 1893. Myrtie married Robert Cox and moved to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Clyde disappeared as a youth and Troy married Pauline Marie Gottschal at Elk Creek, NE in 1907. Troy and his father had a grocery and meat market for several years until Troy moved to Holmesville in gage County in 1919 to farm and raise their two children as Mabel May had been born in '08 and a baby boy in January of 1917. Weeks went by before a name was selected for "baby buster" and the nickname "Buss" has identified Lorraine Troy Van Winkle ever since. Two more children were to arrive to help farm. George Evert and Dorothy Pauline were born in '21 and '23. Troy and Pauline moved to near Silver Creek, in eastern Merrick County in 1937 to farm 500 acres. Mabel had married Quiller Andrews of Wymore and lived her life there. L.T. attended two years of the Farm Operators Short Course at the University of Nebraska and returned home about the time George joined the U. S. Navy for WWII George returned from the Pacific a Chief Petty Officer and married Neola Carter of Silver Creek and farmed next to L.T.; Dorothy married Donald Pollock and lives at Neligh, Nebraska Troy and Pauline moved into Silver Creek until Pauline's death in 1973. They had been married 66 years. Troy passed away in 1977. He had served as Justice of the Peace and on the Village Board. They considered Merrick County their home and rest in Fairview Cemetery just west of the town and their original farm stead. Long time residents of Silver creek, Irl James and Gertrude Elizabeth Lauder Ward had three girls; Doreen, Zelda Zee and Wilda. The blue eyed, baseball playing young farmer from the north edge of town took the pretty slender middle daughter of the Ward's in marriage on the 4th of May in 1941. They moved to their present farm home in 1944 with a new son, Dennis Gene and a daughter, Janet Sue, arrived in '51. Buss and Zee both felt community participation to be a requirement of good citizenship. Buss has been elected to the County Board of Supervisors, serving 16 years. He was Board President in 1968. He had been on the Silver Creek School board, and like his father has been Justice of the Peace and served the township Board. Buss was Farm chairman fro the Merrick County Republican Party and both he and Zee have served on the Methodist Church Board of trustees. Dennis was his grandfather's shadow and was nicknamed "Arspie" by him. Dennis graduated from Kearney State College and has taught Industrial Arts and coached at Hordville, Wymore and Chappell High School. He was has coached teams for the State Eight-Man classic at Hastings and holds a State Office in the Eight Man association. He married Betty Colby of Clarks and has three sons, each a god athlete and student like their grandfather. Janet, nicknamed "Rufus" by her brother, attended Bryan School of Nursing in Lincln and earned her diploma in 1972. She ahs worked as an ophthalmological nurse and is currently a unit supervisor of a behavior modification unit of an extended care facility in Lincoln. She married Jerry Lippincott of Central City and they have three girls and a boy who loves to shadow his grandfather. (written for the Merrick County Historical Society book published 1988) OBIT - Lorraine Troy "Buss" Van Winkle, 80, of Silver Creek, Nebraska died Friday, August 29, 1997 from injuries sustained in a tractor/train accident west of Silver Creek. Services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 2, 1997, at the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek. The Rev. Larry Biederman officiated. Burial was in the Silver Creek Cemetery. Mr. Van Winkle was born January 27, 1917 in Elm Creek, Nebraska to Troy and Pauline (Gottschal) Van Winkle. He graduated from Holmesville High School in 1935 and attended the University of Nebraska before moving to Silver Creek in 1937. He thereafter lived and farmed near Silver Creek the rest of his life. L.T. or "Buss", as he was universally known, married Zelda "Zee" Ward on May 4, 1941 at the United Methodist Church in Sliver Creek. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, and Ak-Sar-Ben since 1966. He served on the local school board for 16 years, the volunteer fire department for 19 years, the Merrick County Fair Board for 41 years and was a county supervisor for 16 years. Survivors include his wife of Silver Creek; one son, Dennis Gene V. W., of Chappell and one daughter, Janet Sue (Mrs. Jerry) Lippincott of Sunrise, Florida; one sister, Dorothy Pollock of Neligh; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Troy and Pauline (Gottschal) Van Winkle, his brother, George E. Van Winkle and sister, Mabel Andrews.
