Lorraine Beaty Milliken, 73, of Raleigh, North Carolina died peacefully at Brighton Gardens of Raleigh on September 30, 2013. She was born December 11, 1939 in Newton, North Carolina, the younger daughter of the late Elsie Phillips Beaty and John McKenzie Beaty of Siler City, North Carolina.
A DuPont Scholar, she graduated from Wingate College and received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A former resident of High Point, North Carolina, she enjoyed a career as a media services coordinator for Guilford County Schools until her retirement in 2000 and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. While living in High Point, she was an active member of Emerywood Baptist Church and served in many capacities including Sunday School teacher, choir member and as a Deacon. In 2005, she moved from High Point to Raleigh to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Once in Raleigh, she became an active member of Trinity Baptist Church where she was blessed to be a member of a very special group of women known as the Ruth Covenant Sunday School Class. Despite the short time she was able to actively participate with that class its members remained attentive and supportive to her until the end.
In addition to her service in the churches to which she belonged, she also found time to serve others in a variety of ways. In her community she volunteered for many projects and organizations including Meals On Wheels, North Raleigh Ministries and High Point Regional Hospital. Every year, she thoroughly enjoyed working with Operation Christmas Child. She could be counted on to joyfully volunteer her time and talents. She believed in the importance of mission work - both local and afar and had the privilege of participating in many mission trips including trips to the former Soviet Union, China and Johannesburg, South Africa where she assisted with the establishment of a library. She was a Bible scholar who could meaningfully contribute in most any theological discussion; but more importantly, as a Christian, she understood the importance of God's word and relied upon and appreciated the comfort of His promises. Her loving and cheerfully unselfish spirit will be missed by those left behind.
She is survived by her daughter, Emery Edwards Milliken of Raleigh; son, John Drury (Dru) Milliken of Raleigh and his wife, Lisa Thompkins Milliken; their two sons, Drury Brooks Milliken and Rowen Tate McKenzie Milliken and a nephew, Isaac Hunter Dunlap of Macomb,Illinois. She was predeceased by her sister, Carolyn Beaty Dunlap, of SilerCity.
