Lorraine Bernard was born Lorraine Margaret Karpen in Ashton, Iowa on December 27, 1916. She was the first of six children, born to Peter John Karpen and Margaret Jackley Karpen. Read More	Lorraine Margaret Bernard December 27, 1916 ~ February 7, 2018 Lorraine Bernard, 101, of Jefferson, South Dakota passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at her residence. Lorraine Bernard was born Lorraine Margaret Karpen in Ashton, Iowa on December 27, 1916. She was the first of six children, born to Peter John Karpen and Margaret Jackley Karpen. She was raised in Ashton and upon graduation from St. Joseph Catholic High School; she entered St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. At that time her family moved to Jefferson, South Dakota. Upon finishing nursing school she became a registered nurse. She worked in both hospital and private duty nursing. While doing private duty nursing, she met and later married Herman "Speed" Bernard in 1940. They began their new life in California and Speed later joined the Navy. After the end of WWII they returned to Jefferson and raised their four children, Rochelle, Julie, Dan and Peter. While caring for her children, Lorraine helped many people in Jefferson with their health issues. In the mid 1960's she began work as an emergency medical nurse at various local race tracks. Her urgent care skills were put to good use. She maintained her nursing license into her 90's. Over the years she was involved in many volunteer activities: Eucharistic Ministry, St. Peter's Mother's Club & Altar Society, and also volunteered at Marian Health Center. She became an expert duplicate bridge player and enjoyed golf. For some 20 years, Lorraine and Speed found great joy in heading to Desert Hot Springs, CA just as the snow started to fly. She lost her beloved Speed on March 30, 1996 after a long and loving marriage. Lorraine continued to live in Jefferson while wintering in California for a number of years. In the following years, she traveled to visit her four children, 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. She lived a very full and active life playing duplicate bridge, golfing and enjoying her family. Lorraine was gifted in life with a great intellect and a dedication to her faith, and blessed all those around her with her gifts. She lived a long and fruitful life to the age of 101. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings; Gene Karpen; Merlyn Karpen; Anita O'Neal; Norma Jane Stowe and daughter-in-law, Barbara Murphy Bernard. She is survived by her sister, Dolores Schmidt of Waterford, MI, children: Rochelle (Charlie) Wulf of Beaumont, TX; Julie (Don) Axlund of Escondido, CA; Dan Bernard of Omaha, NE; Peter (Phyllis) Bernard of Jefferson, SD; grandchildren and great grandchildren.
