Merlyn was born November 3, 1920, in Ashton, IA, to Peter and Margaret Karpen. He attended school in Jefferson and graduated in 1939. He married Arlene Pegar August 16, 1944, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. They made their home on a farm in rural Jefferson, where they raised their six children before moving to town in 1984. Read More	Merlyn Karpen, 94, of Jefferson passed away Friday, May 1, 2015, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. Merlyn was born November 3, 1920, in Ashton, IA, to Peter and Margaret Karpen. He attended school in Jefferson and graduated in 1939. He married Arlene Pegar August 16, 1944, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Jefferson. They made their home on a farm in rural Jefferson, where they raised their six children before moving to town in 1984. Merlyn was engaged in farming for numerous years and subsequently established Karpen Well and Karpen Grain. He partnered with Roger Gaswint to establish the Karpen Grain Consignment Auction. Merlyn served his community on the Jefferson Elevator Board, Jefferson Township Board, Civil Bend School Board, and the Mayor of Jefferson. Many from the community visited Merlyn at his post at the “shop”. There was no one who was a stranger to Merlyn. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor, generosity and willingness to help those in need. Merlyn was a determined man who felt there was nothing he could not accomplish if he worked hard enough. He and his wife, Arlene, were the unofficial greeters of Jefferson each evening as they waved to people from their bench by the garage. Survivors include his sons, Douglas (Lorena) Karpen of Houston, Texas, Doyle (Deborah) Karpen of Jefferson, Jack Karpen (Janet Martin) of Jefferson and Bruce (Barb) Karpen of Centerville, Iowa; his daughters Karen (Tim) Myers, and Kathy (Monte) Hambleton, all of Houston; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
