This week it is our painful duty to record the death of another. Lewis Ballard, who was one of the older business men of the town, died at his home ?? o'clock on Saturday morning, Nov. 28. He was afflicted with what is termed progressive pernicious anemia, disease which is very uncommon, and the cause and the remedy for which is unknown. He had been complaining some for several years and has been confined to his bed since the middle of April. He has been out but once since that time, and that was when he rode to the poling place to vote. The disease with which he was afflicted is a peculiar one. It is, in fact, consumption of the blood. All through his sickness he had a ravenous appetite, but what he ate seemed to afford no nourishment. He did not suffer much, but had so little strength that he was almost helpless. Deceased was born at North Collins, Erie county, N. Y., May 4, 1837, where his early life was spent. February 10, 1863, he was united in marriage with Catherine Nenno, a native of the same place. In 1867 they moved to Miohigan remaining there one year, and came to Manchester, Iowa, in 1868, remaining there three years. They were located at Parkersburg one year and came to Cherokee in 1873 and have since resided here. He was in business here a good many years and was very successful. The past ten years or so he has not been actively engaged in business, but paid some attention to the apple trade each fall. For several years be has spent his winters in the south and west, the climate seeming to agree with him better. His wife and three children survive him. These are Mrs. F. G Puffett, Dr. F. A. Ballard and Lewis Ballard, all of whom live here. Two sons died of diphtheria during the scourge of 1880. The funeral occurred at the Catholic church at 10:30 Monday forenoon and was largely attended. The Impressive service was conducted by Rev. Father Saunders. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery. The deceased had many good traits of character, and many citizens of Cherokee and elsewhere will remember him for kindnesses done them. The family the sympathy of all in their hour of affliction.
