Cooper Dize, one of Crisfield's most prominent citizens, died at his home on Main street at 4:30 o'clock Thursday morning as a result of a paralytic stroke suffered about a week before. He had celebrated his 77th birthday on March 8th. Mr. Dize was born March 8th, 1865, on Smith's Island, the son of the late Henry James and Juliana Evans Dize. His family moved to Crisfield when he was five years of age. As they were one of the pioneer families of this section, they had to clear away trees and bushes to prepare room to build their home. There were no churches at that time here and only a few hotels. He had watched Crisfield grow to its present size. Mr. Dize had been a hard worker all his life and had been an active member of this community. When quite a child, long before the crab packing business started, he would catch crabs and sell them to stores, and families. He later started to work in a blacksmith shop, his wages only being 5c per hour. He was later advanced to $3.00 per week. He worked several years serving his trade without missing a single day of work. After he had served his apprenticeship he was raised to $8.00 per week. His ingenuity led him to inventing the crab screw, and scrape bag which is still in use today by all the watermen of the Eastern Shore. He married Feb. 29, 1888, at the age of 23, Miss Phoebe Ward, daughter of James H. and Sally Somers Ward at the Immanuel Parsonage, with the Rev. F. C. McSorley performing the ceremony. Through careful management of his small wages he was able to save enough to buy a store, the fixtures, and stock for it. This was paid for in cash. His business was a success from the start. Active in community welfare, he was later elected to the town council to which he devoted much of his time and interest. The public, recognizing his outstanding ability, also elected him County Commissioner six years ago. A member of Immanuel Church since early childhood, he served on the Official Board there with unselfish devotion, and was always one of the first to give his time and money for anything which promised to benefit the church and community. A fine type of Christian gentleman, with scores of friends in all parts of the county, news of his death has been received with sincere sorrow by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Saturday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock, in Immanuel Methodist Church, with the pastor, Rev. J. R. Bicking officiating, assisted by Rev. Charles M. Elderdice, pastor of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Crisfield cemetery. Mr. Dize is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Paul Ayres, Collector of Customs in Crisfield, and two sons, State Senator L. Elwood Dize and Walden Dize, all of Crisfield. One sister, Mrs. Charles O. Daugherty, of Crisfield, also survives. The "Times" extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
