Read More	Death of Louis Damme Louis Damme was born April 12, 1843, at Berger, Mo., and died at Cook, Neb., Sunday evening at 8 o'clock, January 13, 1918, aged seventy-four years, nine months and one day. Mr. Damme came to Nebraska fifty-six years ago. There was plenty of land to be homesteaded then but he was not yet twenty-one. He bought the farm which is still the Damme home place three and a half miles northeast of Cook. At that time the nearest railroad station was St. Joseph, Mo. Transportation from there was by steam boat to Nebraska City or by stage coach from there to any place this side of the Pacific ocean. It was very interesting to hear Mr. Damme relate the history of the early settlement days. Mr. Damme was a highly respected man who was well thought of by old and young people. He was always cheerful and ever ready to assist his friends, honest and upright in all his dealings. He was a member of the St. Paul church for many years and attended the church services unless illness prevented him. February 17, 1870, he was married to Miss Dorothea Reimers. The ceremony was performed at Helena by the late Rev. H. Hempeler, The family have lived in this neighborhood until a few years ago they moved to Cook. Mr. Damme was taken sick two weeks ago and although the family assisted by a trained nurse and the best medical aid tried to restore his health he passed away to his home above. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the family home and were conducted by Rev. J. Abele. The remains were laid to rest in the St. Paul cemetery after which the services were continued in the church. The funeral was very largely attended. Those who are mourning his death are his wife and six children, Mrs. Anna Huhold, Mrs. Alwine Klass, Mrs. Bertha Bentzinger, Julius Damme, Mrs. Emma Nabor, and Louis Damme, Jr., also four sons-in-law and two daughters-in-law, and twenty grandchildren and many other relatives and a wide circle of friends.
