March 16, 1953 - Carroll Daily Times - Louis J. Schmitt, 62, of Sioux City, formerly of Carroll, died at 11:25 a.m. Sunday at St. Anthony Hospital, following a four-day illness. Schmitt, 62, of Sioux City, formerly of Carroll, died at 11:25 a.m. Sunday at St. Anthony Hospital, following a four-day illness. He had entered the hospital March 12. Mr. Schmitt was the father of Maurice Schmitt and Mrs. Alton Stangl of Carroll. Funeral services are set for 9 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Lawrence Church, to which Mr. Schmitt belonged while a Carroll resident. The Rev. Arthur S. Poeckes will offer requiem mass. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul's cemetery. The body is resting at the Sharp Funeral Home, where the rosary will be prayed at 8 o'clock each night before the final rites. Mr. Schmitt was along time employee of the Chicago & North Western Railway company. He was a fireman until 12 years ago, when he was advanced to engineer on the Sioux City — Omaha run out of Sioux City. Four years ago he moved to Sioux City from Carroll. A son of Joseph and Juliana Schmitt, Mr. Schmitt was born Jan. 3, 1891, at Humphrey, Neb. He was married at St. Francis Church in Humphrey in May, 1913, to Theresa Schneider. Mr. and Mrs. Schmitt moved to Carroll in 1919. Mrs. Schmitt died June 17, 1932. Mr. Schmitt leaves five children: Paul, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Emmett (Florence) Conroy, Washington, D.C.; Edwin L., Milwaukee; Maurice, Carroll; and Mrs. Alton (Marian) Stangl, Carroll. Also surviving are eight grandsons; one granddaughter; three brothers: Carl, Peoria, Illinois, and Frank and Joe, Mt. Angel, Ore.; and one sister, Mrs. Frank Fuger, Platte Center, Neb. One sister is deceased. Mr. Schmitt was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers.
