Description	:	Louis John Schmadeke was born January 26, 1928 to August and Henrietta Schultz Schmadeke. He attended St. Paul's Hanover Lutheran Parochial School until the eighth grade, before graduating from Schleswig Community High School. Louis married his high school sweetheart Carol Ernst in 1948. Louis and Carol made their home on a farm 6 miles northwest of Schleswig. To that union, Louis and Carol were blessed with five children; Coleen, Harlan, Keith, Jill, and Timothy. Read More	Louis John Schmadeke was born January 26, 1928 to August and Henrietta Schultz Schmadeke. He attended St. Paul's Hanover Lutheran Parochial School until the eighth grade, before graduating from Schleswig Community High School. Louis married his high school sweetheart Carol Ernst in 1948. Louis and Carol made their home on a farm 6 miles northwest of Schleswig. To that union, Louis and Carol were blessed with five children; Coleen, Harlan, Keith, Jill, and Timothy. On August 31, 1964, after a valiant fight with cancer, Carol passed away. With the help of family and friends, Louis continued to raise his family and farm. Through mutual friends, Louis and Dorothy Ashbrook and her four children; Nancy, Sheryl, Jane and Michael were introduced in June 1966. They were married in December of 1966. After their marriage Louis, Dorothy and their 9 children returned to the farm northwest of Schleswig. The union of Louis and Dorothy was blessed with a son, Thomas in 1971. Through the years, Louis enjoyed farming, particularly feeding out Black Angus cattle. In 1978, Louis and Dorothy moved to the Schmadeke family farm southwest of Schleswig, where they continued to raise crops and cattle. After retiring from farming in 1982. Louis worked as a roofing contractor for several years, while involved in the feed and seed business. He also managed the Schleswig Community Building before his retirement, and was Mayor of Arthur in his retirement. In his later years, Louis continued to enjoy his large family, watching fast-pitch softball, fishing in Minnesota, and visiting the mountains out west. He was a lifetime active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he served in several offices. Louis passed away at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison the evening of October 2 at the age of 80. Louis was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, his parents, and his brother Raymond; two grandchildren, Charity Biddle and Lee Ann McKibben, and one great-grandchild, Max McKibben; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Shirley Neumann; brother-in-law Irvin Stehr. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and children: Coleen (John Reich), Harlan, Nancy Woebke, Keith (Marlys), Sheryl (Chuck Prokupek), Jane Edsen, Michael (Diana) Ashbrook, Jill, Timothy (Cherie), and Thomas (Amy); grandchildren: Jason Harm, Matt McKibben, Dustin and Dawn Biddle, April (Brad Leeper), Aaron, Heather and Nathan Schmadeke, James (Andrea) Prokupek, Adrianne (Maurus Pickett) and Elizabeth Prokupek, Megan Malone and Cody Woebke, Ryan and Amanda Ashbrook, Jordan, Abigail and Emily Schmadeke, Cael, Jack and Hope Schmadeke; great-grandchildren: Tyler Harm, Spencer Biddle, Jacob Johnson, Bailey Biddle, Dillon Picket, Mollie and Johanna McKibben, Caitlynn and Dylan Malone, Caitlynn and Josilynn Prokupek; sisters-in-law LaVonne Schmadeke and Beverly Stehr, nephew Lonnie Ray (Susan) Schmadeke; great-nephews Cory (Stephanie) Schmadeke and family, and Chad (Kelli) Schmadeke; many relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 6, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the services and graveside rites at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township, Charter Oak. Organist Creta Teut provided accompaniment for congregational hymns, "Nearer, My God, To Thee," "Lift High the Cross," "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" and "Asleep In Jesus." Pianist Heather Schmadeke provided accompaniment for the hymn, "On Eagle's Wings." Serving as pallbearers were Nathan Schmadeke, Jordan Schmadeke, James Prokupek, Jason Harm, Aaron Schmadeke, Cory Schmadeke, Ryan Ashbrook, Cody Woebke and Dustin Biddle.
