Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township in Charter Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Merle Mahnken officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Henrietta Bertha Schmadeke was born Dec. 25, 1907, the daughter of Louis and Mary (Huebner) Schultz. "Hattie" was baptized in Christ on Jan. 5, 1908, and confirmed April 9, 1922, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. She also received her education at the Hanover Parochial School. After school she began working for various families keeping house. On April 24, 1927 she was united in marriage to August "Pat" Schmadeke at St. Paul Lutheran Church. The couple settled on a farm near Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of two children. In 1978, Hattie and Pat moved to Schleswig, where Hattie continued to live until 1998, when she moved to the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Immanuel Ladies Aid, the Farmeretts and the Birthday Club. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, crocheting, making ceramics, playing cards and socializing with her friends and family. She was known for her wonderful cooking, especially her fried chicken, gravy and apple pies. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was always a good sport. Survivors include two sons, Louis and his wife, Dorothy of Arthur, Iowa and Raymond and his wife, La Vonne of Kiron, Iowa; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Elvera Moeller of Denison, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Melita Schultz of Schleswig; and other relatives and many friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Miller and her husband, Pete, Ellen Nemitz and her husband, Bill and Esther Rabe and her husband, Walter; a brother, Art; a grandson, Lance Schmadeke; a great-granddaughter, Charity Biddle; a step-great-granddaughter, Lee Ann Mc Kibben; a step-great-great-grandson, Maxwell Mc Kibben; a daughter-in-law, Carol Schmadeke; and a brother-in-law, George Moeller.
