He was born in Bridgewater, SD to Edward Determan and Dorothy (Huisman) Determan on January 6, 1928. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Phelps in Montrose on September 1, 1948. He was born in Bridgewater, SD to Edward Determan and Dorothy (Huisman) Determan on January 6, 1928. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Phelps in Montrose on September 1, 1948. Louie worked as a farmer in the Montrose area, as a lumberjack in the Redwood forest in Booneville, CA and later returned to farming in Montrose while he also worked at Schoenemans Lumber Company in Sioux Falls, SD. In 1960 the family moved to Sioux Falls where he worked at Foremost Dairy and ended his career retiring from John Morrell. He and Lorraine also purchased Genie’s Custom Draperies where they fabricated and installed draperies for businesses such as Sears, Penney’s, Dewitts Design and Montgomery Furniture, to name a few. Louie has many relatives in the area and always enjoyed spending time with them. He enjoyed cooking and gardening and could grow the most amazing Mandevilla’s (his favorite flower). He also loved playing cards and was always up for a game if anyone would ask. He touched the hearts of all of those that he met and was loved by everyone. Survivors include 3 daughters: Jill McPherson (Ron) of Sioux Falls, Jan Nelson (John Maglothin) of Sioux Falls, Connie Crossan (Kim) of Columbia, SD: Twelve grandchildren, Shannon Cole, Shawn Ebdrup (Dennis), Kelly Castillo (Oscar), Josh Koch (Tracy), John McPherson (Jenna), Matt McPherson (Angie), Aileen Winters (Justin), Robert Crossan (Stella), Chris Crossan (Cali), Evan Nelson (Nancy), Rachel Rounds (Travis), Ben Nelson (Katie); Twenty Three great grandchildren , Alexandria, Shelby, Cole, Libby, Cali, Jayden, Carlos, Aracely, Tyler, Mason, Amara, Justin, Max, Dillon, Micah, Isaiah, Cohen, Riggs, Connor, Hunter, Addie, Joe, and Jack; Two Sisters, Jan Wegner and Phyllis Hildebrand both of Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Dorothy Determan, his wife Lorraine, daughter Jackie Cole, brothers Cleo Determan, Danny Determan, Richard Determan and sisters Eudora Vanderboom, and JoAnn Surrell. The family would like to express special thanks to the staff at Tieszen Memorial Home. Words can’t express how much we appreciated their loving care in the last years of Louie’s life.
