Description	:	Mr. Louis Merriman Jordan, Sr., Union business man and civic leader passed away Friday afternoon, September 21, 2018. He was the husband of Beverly Timmons Jordan of East Wood Ave., Union. Mr. Jordan was born July 29, 1935 in Union, a son of the late Alfred Foster Jordan and Elizabeth Jones Jordan. Read More	Mr. Louis Merriman Jordan, Sr., Union business man and civic leader passed away Friday afternoon, September 21, 2018. He was the husband of Beverly Timmons Jordan of East Wood Ave., Union. Mr. Jordan was born July 29, 1935 in Union, a son of the late Alfred Foster Jordan and Elizabeth Jones Jordan. He was a graduate of Union High School where he played football and basketball, he was co-captain of the 1952 football team. Louis played on the 1952 South Carolina Shrine Bowl team and the 1953 All-Star Team. He attended Clemson College where he majored in Agricultural Engineering and Business, he served as Sports Editor, Business Manager, and Editor in Chief of The Tiger, the college newspaper. In August of 1958, Louis married Beverly Timmons, they moved to Winston Salem, where he worked for Integon, Metropolitan Life, and the North Carolina Highway Department as Director of Right of Way Engineering. During this time, his civic activities included serving as treasurer of the Winston Salem Jaycees and co-chairman of the Winston-Salem Miss America Pageant in 1963. He was also appointed to the fund-raising committee to bring the National School of Fine Arts to the city. In 1965, Louis and his wife Beverly returned to Union. He, along with his brothers, Foster and Marshall became members of the ACE Hardware national franchise in 1967 and expanded to Gaffney, until they began commercial real estate development by constructing buildings for lease. Louis and his brothers, founded, LoFoMar Associates, LTD. LoFoMar Associates developed the North Duncan Bypass in Union. They later developed Merchants Walk Shopping Center. MarLo, Inc. was later formed to develop Bermuda Run, a residential sub-division. In 1987, Louis joined with Dr. James Cooper and other investors to organize Endosafe, Inc. Endosafe is a Federal Drug Administration licensed company. He served as the director of Endosafe, Inc. Louis has been very active in civic affairs on both the county and state level. He had served as a charter member of the Catawba Regional Planning Council, including Executive Committee membership and Council Chairman from 1969 to 1976. From 1967 to 1976 he served on the City of Union Planning and Zoning Board and was chairman for three years. In 1971, Louis served as Chairman of Union County’s Overall Economic Development Committee and was the author of its overall development plan which resulted in the county acquiring Rural Development grants for waste water treatment allowing several industrial companies to build and expand. Louis was honored in 1982 by the Union Jaycee’s by being awarded their Distinguished Service Award. Louis Served on the Union County Council and was instrumental in securing grants for the renovation of the courthouse and the county jail facilities. He became chairman of the first Union County Development Board in 1981. Louis served under Governors Richard Riley and Carol Campbell on the South Carolina Development Board from 1987 to 1993 and was instrumental in organizing a state program for rural economic development. Louis was the founder of the Union Work-Education Council in 1980 and was a member of the State Job Service Improvement Council where he was awarded the Annual Citation from the South Carolina Chapter of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security. He is an Alumnus of Leadership South Carolina, Class of 1984. From 1971 until 2007 he served on the Board of Directors of Union Federal Savings Bank, later Provident Community Bank. Louis served as the chairman of the Loan and Audit Committees and later served as chairman of the Board of Directors. For five years he served as chairman of the House Committee of the Union B.P.O Elks Lodge #1321 and served as President of the Union Shrine Club. Louis was a member of Masonic Lodge #75 and was a York Rite Mason. Louis was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church (now Union Presbyterian Church) where he had served as both a Deacon and Elder. He chaired the renovation program for the educational building. Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years, Beverly Timmons Jordan, are a daughter, Marsha Elizabeth Jordan of Union; two sons, Louis Merriman Jordan, Jr. and wife, Jane of Union and Foster Timmons Jordan and wife, Cammie of Chapin; five grandchildren, Morgan Elizabeth Hathcock, Ann Jordan Hathcock, Louis Merriman Jordan, III, Christopher Foster Jordan and Elizabeth Elaine Jordan. He was predeceased by his brothers, Foster Jordan and Marshall Jordan. Graveside services will be held 3:30 PM Tuesday, September 25, 2018 at Presbyterian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 PM prior to the service at the Jordan family home, 418 East Main St., Union, SC. Memorials may be made to Union Presbyterian Church, 101 W.
