Description	:	Mrs. Louisa Cumi Gates George died at the age of 81. She was one of the oldest pioneers in Harvey county, died in October 1938. Louisa Cumi Poland was born near Hillsboro, Illinois December 19, 1856, a daughter of William and Harriet Malinda (McDavid) Poland. Her father was a Presbyterian minister. They were of Scotch-Irish and English descent. In 1876, she was united in marriage to Charles Gates at the home of an uncle near Hillsboro, Illinois. She was one of the oldest pioneers in Harvey county, died in October 1938. Louisa Cumi Poland was born near Hillsboro, Illinois December 19, 1856, a daughter of William and Harriet Malinda (McDavid) Poland. Her father was a Presbyterian minister. They were of Scotch-Irish and English descent. In 1876, she was united in marriage to Charles Gates at the home of an uncle near Hillsboro, Illinois. In 1884 they moved to Kansas and settled in the McLains neighborhood. Charles and Cumi had only been there a few weeks when tragedy struck this family, Charles became ill and died. Louisa was only 28 when Charles died she was a widow with four sons W.L. (Lonnie) was eight years old, the twins, John Ralph (J.R.) and Charles Alpha (Alph) were five, and Arthur Charles was two years old. Their daughter Caroline (Carrie) was born the following April after her father's death in November. Charles was buried at Greenwood cemetery. On March 1, 1887 she was united in marriage with William A. George of McLains, Kansas a widower with seven children. This union was blessed with two children. At Louisa's funeral a quartette played three of her favorite songs, "Sweet Hour of Prayer", "The Old Rugged Cross", and "She We Gather at the River". Louisa Cumi parents were William Poland of Hillsboro, Illinois and Malinda McDavid of Hillsboro, Illinois.
