SIMMONS CALLED BY DEATH Widow of Early-Day State Figure Succumbs Here Mrs. Louisa Gavitt Simmons, widow of the late Michael T. Simmons, died at the family farm here, purchased in 1898, this morning. Her husband, a native son of this state, was prominent in the early history of statehood and a delegate to the convention which started the proceedings to bring Washington into the union as a state. Mrs. Simmons was born October 9, 1857, at Dimock, Pennsylvania, and was educated in that state teaching school there four years and later teaching for eight years in Washington, beginning in 1883, while this state was then a territory. She was married to Mr. Simmons October 11, 1885 at Napavine, Washington. Prior to that, her husband had been employed on the survey parties which surveyed the Northern Pacific across the state and had been stationed in Kittitas county from 1881 to 1884. At the time of their marriage he was engaged in logging on Puget Sound and in 1891 the family started farming on Oyster Bay, in Mason county. In 1896 they moved to the Kittitas valley and for two years lived on a rented ranch, in 1898 purchasing the ranch which has been the family home ever since. Her husband died several years ago. She leaves two children, a son, Lee, and a daughter, Ruby, both residents of this valley; nephews Arthur Simmons and Walter, Parker and Clayton Lowe of this valley; a sister, Mrs. Ruby Lowe, of Ellensburg, another sister, Mrs. Jennie Buck, and two brothers, Lee Gavitt and Morgan Gavitt, all of Sonestown, Pennsylvania. Cremation will follow.
