Although her many friends and neighbors expected to hear the sad news of her death, yet it came as a shock. All those who knew her realized that they had lost a true friend and neighbor. Mrs. Horton although well advanced in years was always active and able to be about her household duties and hardly knew what it was to be sick. October 8th, 1910 she had a stroke of paralysis and from that time until her death her condition became more and more hopeless and even though she was bedfast for sixteen months she was cheerful and patient and never gave up hopes of recovering so that she would be able to be up and around and minister to the needs of her loved ones. She fully appreciated what was being done to help her and her one great desire was to be able to repay with her loving hands those who so carefully and tenderly cared for her. In her demise the community has lost one who was ever ready to help suffering humanity, one who was a true mother, neighbor, fiend and Christian, one who practiced true Christianity in the every day walk of life, a pioneer mother, who underwent the many privations of life that she might advance the welfare of her friends and loved ones. Hers was a noble life full of kindness to all and to be unselfish and ever ready to sacrifice for the good of others was her highest aim. Her deeds of charity, love and kindness will never be forgotten but will live on forever bearing the fruits of a true Christian mother who made the world better for having lived in it to distribute sunshine and loving deeds of kindness to humanity. Louisa Grove was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania March 29, 1828 and passed away at her home south of Glidden, Iowa, February 13th, 1912, being 83 years, 10 months and 14 days old at the time of her death. From girlhood she was a member of the Master’s family. She was a member of the German Reform Church until she moved to where there was no church of that faith. She then united with the Christian church in that part of Bedford county where she lived an remained a member until she moved to Jackson County, Iowa, where she worked with the people of the Methodist Church and she continued a worker in that church as long as there was a class at Carrollton after moving to this county. When the Methodist conference dropped Carrollton from their list of appointments she united with the United Brethren Church, which was soon organized at Carrollton and was a member of that church at the time of her death. In 1840 in Bedford County, Pennsylvania she was united in marriage to Oliver Horton. After the close of the Civil War she moved with her husband to Jackson Co., Iowa where they resided until 1869 when they moved to Carroll County. In 1875 they moved to their present home where for 37 years they have worked side by side in the battles of life. To this union were born eleven children, J.G. Horton of Dedham, A.J. Horton of Sioux City, W.H. Horton of Glidden, R.A. Horton of Fon Du Lac, Wis., James A. Horton, deceased, George E. Horton of Glidden, Mrs. Mary Jane Coppock of LeMars, Iowa, Miss Iola W. Horton of Glidden and Mrs. Anna L. Zenner of Wentworth, S.D. Two girls died in infancy in Pennsylvania. All of the living children were present at the funeral. Besides leaving 8 children to mourn her loss there is her aged companion, 39 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren besides her many friends and neighbors. The funeral services were held at the United Brethren Church at Carrollton Friday February 16th, at 1 P.M. Rev. Chapman, pastor, preached the sermon. The church where she often went to worship was filled by those who went to show their respect and love for one who had been to them a friend and neighbor at all times. After the services the body was laid to rest in the Carrollton cemetery. The bereaved husband and children have the heart felt sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
