JEFFERSON BEE - Wednesday, December 26th, 1917 - It must be horrors to die of suffocation, or even drowning, but probably the most torturing death is that of burning. Mrs. John Finger arose earlier than usual last Saturday morning with the intention of starting operations in preparation for a big day's washing, and had started the fire in the kitchen stove. Sitting down upon the oven door, as she was wont, it is thought that she either fell asleep or partially fainted away. At least her clothing came in contact with the heated stove and caught fire. Mr. Finger heard her scream, but thought she was talking to the dog; but a second scream brought him to a realization that something was wrong. Rushing to the kitchen, he found Mrs. Finger endeavoring to reach the door with her clothing in flames. Grabbing a blanket which lay near, the husband endeavored to smother the flames, but they had already done their work. Dr. Kester was called at once, and upon examination, found that her body at the waist, about the neck, and on her wrists were severely burned. She suffered untold agony all day Sunday, and died on Monday morning. Grand Junction Globe. JEFFERSON HERALD - Wednesday, December 26th, 1917 - Louise Stroh, eldest child of John and Elizabeth Stroh, was born in Putman Co, Illinois, April 20, 1860, and died at her home in Grand Junction, Iowa, December 17, 1917, aged 57 years, seven months and 27 days On March 13. 1879, she was united in marriage to John Finger and to this union were born eight children, two daughters and six sons, all of whom are living, namely John of Paton, Mrs W.H. Enston of Beardstwn, IL, Mrs. Delia Bridget of Grand Junction Iowa, Edward of Mt. Morris, IL., Harry of Leonore, IL, Roy, Lester and Paul of Grand Junction, Iowa. Early in their married life the Finger family moved to Greene county, settling near Paton and living there for fourteen years. For a number of years the family have been residents of Grand Junction. Mrs. Finger was converted to Christ when a girl and united with the M.E. church. At the time of her death she was a faithful member of tho local M.E. church. Besides the husband and children there are left to mourn her death, the aged mother, Mrs. J. Rose of Streator Illinois; and four sisters and three brothers: Mrs. E.F. Shawbuck, Mrs. R.N. Shawbuck, Mrs. John N. Shawbuck and Mrs. J.H. Shawbuck of Leonore, Illinois; Frank Rose of Streator, Illinois; and Wm. and Henry Rose of Leonore, Illinois. There are eleven grandchildren. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, December 19, from the Grand Junction M.E. church in charge of pastor E.A. Place. Interment was made in the city cemetery.
