The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 10:30 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Patrick Sparling officiating. Interment will be in the Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Columbus. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. Louise Marie Ahrens was born on April 5, 1918, in rural Platte County, Nebraska, the eldest of five children of G.E. and Minnie Marty. She was baptized on April 21, 1918, at Christ Lutheran Church, Columbus, and confirmed in the Christian faith on May 15, 1932. She attended Christ Lutheran School and was the Platte County spelling champion during her 7th and 8th grade years. Louise graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in May 1936. On November 1, 1939, Louise married Allen Carl Ahrens, who had also grown up in the Christ Lutheran community and was a member of Louise's grade school and confirmation classes. Louise claimed to have "set her cap for him" already in the 5th grade. The couple moved to Columbus early in their marriage, and later joined Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus, where they were active members. They were blessed with two children, Patricia and Robert. For over 60 years they made their home at 1322 14th St., Columbus. Allen preceded Louise in death on March 8, 2006 after 66 years of marriage. For 33 years, Louise was a valued employee of the Safeway Store in Columbus, and in 1962 was awarded recognition by the local newspaper as "the friendliest, most courteous women employee" in Columbus. For many years after her retirement, former customers greeted here with words of appreciation and memories of experiences going through her checkout stand. In retirement, Louise took pleasure in making home visits to shut-ins, coordinating drivers for Meals-on-Wheels, participating in Bible classes, traveling with her husband for visits to their children and grandchildren, reading the daily newspapers, working crosswords, creating counted cross-stitch needlework, collecting stamps, and shopping at garage sales for additions to her many collections. Louise relished being a grandmother to her five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Fondly remembered by her grandchildren are her pork tenderloin dinners, her homemade pies, her love of word games, card playing, and puzzles, her rules about her hair ("Do not touch") and her apparel ("I don't wear slacks") and her tireless enthusiasm for time shared with grandchildren. When packing up Louise's home for her move to apartment living, the family found a box labeled "Rocks from the Grandkids."
