Herrick, 89, of Montrose, IA, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, from the chapel of Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, IA, with Father Gerald Hoenig officiating. Burial was in the Montrose Cemetery with Vigen Memorial Home in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Herrick died Wednesday, Jan. 2 at her home. She was a leader of the Montrose Busy Bees 4-H Club for 20 years. After ending her service as a 4-H leader, she continued her involvement with the Lee County Fair by volunteering her time in the Art Hall as a superintendent and by creating decorative exhibits displayed each year. She became active with the Montrose Senior Citizens, holding various offices including, president and vice president. Her most well known contribution came in the form of the floats she created for the Montrose Watermelon Festival and other local parades. She was a charter member of the Montrose Township Historical Society, which was instrumental in renovating the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Montrose, which was later placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1994, she was the recipient of the Heritage Award from the Montrose Watermelon Festival Committee for her years of contributions to the festival. The Lee County Sesquicentennial Committee also recognized her by asking her to create the county quilt block for the Iowa Sesquicentennial Quilt. Born December 31, 1912, in Green Bay Bottoms, Washington Township, Lee County, IA, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Elizabeth (Schroeder) Wenke. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion E. Herrick; an infant daughter, Katherine Marie Herrick; an infant son; two infant grandchildren, Gabrielle Herrick and Keith Mullins; four brothers, John Wenke Jr., Ferd Wenke, Bernard Wenke, and Henry Wenke; and a sister, Anna Rex. Survivors include three daughters, two sons-in-law, and a future son-in-law, Doris Ann and Tom Mullins, Livingston, Christal and Jim Lewiston, Montrose, and Melva Webb and fiance, Bob Nunnery, Byrdstown; a son and a daughter-in-law, Everett and Debra Herrick, Ft. Madison, IA; two brothers, Herman Wenke, Ft. Madison, IA, and Bill Wenke, Keosauqua, IA; two sisters, Mary Lewis, Colona, IL, and Elizabeth O�Connor, Elvaston, IL; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
