The boy and his companion, Don Garrett, 17, were paddling in their rented canoe when the waves of the passing motor boat caused the canoe to overturn. Neither of the boys could swim. A man in a rowboat nearby pulled the Garret boy out of the water, but young Higgins had already disappeared. The body was recovered 30 minutes later. Artificial respiration and inhalator treatments failed to revive the boy. Both boys were employed at the Firestone Store in Omaha. Lowell Wayne Higgins was born at Villisca, May 21, 1928, and was the son of Lowell and Irene Benson Higgins of Omaha. Besides his parents, he leaves four brothers, and one sister. They are Stanley, Phillip, Billy, Larry, and Carolyn, also his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Higgins of Villisca, and other relatives. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Harry E. Swanson Mortuary in Omaha, and graveside rites were at the Villisca Cemetery at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Frederick W. Thompson in charge.
